Get a Quote →How much student health insurance costs in Spain depends on several factors, not just one headline price. The right policy should balance cost with visa suitability — the cheapest option may not always be suitable or accepted. This page explains what affects the price of Sanitas student cover and why a personalised quote is the most accurate way to know your cost. For eligible students aged 14 to 35 coming to Spain for 3 to 14 months, Sanitas International Students is usually the first option to check.
This page covers general student health-insurance cost. If you need cover for a Spanish student visa application, it must meet the visa requirements — see student visa health insurance, and our guides on when to buy and before your consulate appointment.
Factors
The cost of student health insurance in Spain depends on several factors, including:
A younger standard student may have different options from an over-35 student, a renewal applicant or a family case. This is why it is better to request a quote based on your real situation than to rely on a generic online price.
No fixed price
There is no single fixed price for student health insurance in Spain, because the right policy and premium depend on your profile and the visa requirements. A quote allows us to check whether the student fits Sanitas International Students or whether another option such as Sanitas Residents is more appropriate, then price the cover accurately for your situation. Always check the current premium and policy terms before purchasing.
SIS vs Residents cost
Sanitas International Students is often the more student-focused and cost-conscious route for standard cases, where the applicant meets the product requirements. Sanitas International Students may require valid proof of enrolment, matriculation or acceptance from a recognised university, school, language academy or educational institution. Where suitable proof of studies cannot be provided, or where the student does not fit the age, duration or route requirements, Sanitas Residents or another Sanitas option may need to be reviewed.
Sanitas Residents may cost more, but it can be better value for over-35 students, renewals, dependants or longer stays where the standard student product does not fit. The cheapest option is not always the safest — the policy must still meet the visa requirements. See the full comparison.
No-copay cost
A policy with co-payments may have a lower monthly premium, but the insured person pays extra when using certain covered services, and the policy may not meet the visa requirement. For Spanish student visa applications, no-copay cover is usually the safest option. A slightly higher premium for suitable no-copay cover can be better value than a cheaper policy that is rejected.
Annual vs monthly
Some policies may be paid monthly, while visa applications may require proof of policy validity for a defined period. The payment method and duration can depend on the product, applicant profile and application route. Students should check whether the consulate expects the insurance to cover a full academic year, the full course period or a specific date range. For visa purposes, the certificate dates matter, and the payment arrangement should support the documentation you need.
Value
Cheap usually means the lowest price. Good value means suitable cover that supports your visa at a sensible price. A policy that is cheap but rejected by the consulate is not good value, because you may then need a second policy or face delays. See affordable student health insurance and why cheap is not always suitable.
Payment
Many international students need to arrange health insurance before arrival because the certificate is needed for the visa appointment, when they may not yet have a Spanish bank account, Spanish IBAN, NIE or TIE card. Spanish Health Insurance can help arrange Sanitas student cover with credit card payment options where available. This is especially useful for students from the UK, USA, Canada, Australia and other non-EU countries.
Many students also arrange cover without an NIE using passport details, and can contract cover before arrival with a future start month.
