🛡️ Zero Waiting Periods — Cover Starts Day One

Health Insurance Spain.
No Waiting Periods.
Full Cover. Visa Approved.

Most health insurance plans in Spain make you wait 3–12 months before your cover kicks in. These plans don't. Cover is active from your very first day — and they meet 100% of consulate requirements for the Non-Lucrative Visa, Digital Nomad Visa, and all other Spanish visas.

⚠️

Most health insurance plans in Spain include waiting periods of 3–12 months. During a waiting period your policy exists but your cover does not. For a Spanish visa, this is not acceptable — the consulate requires full cover from day one. Only Sanitas Residents and Residents Platinum deliver this.

⚡ Why it matters

Waiting Periods Get Visa Applications Rejected

The consulate checks that your cover is active immediately. A policy with waiting periods means your specialist, hospital and surgery cover doesn't start for months — which fails the requirement.

⚠️ What happens when your insurance has a waiting period?

You buy a policy in January to apply for your NLV. Your policy has a 3-month waiting period for specialist consultations and a 6-month waiting period for hospital admissions. Your policy start date is January 1st — but you have no real cover until April or July. The consulate rejects your application because your insurance does not provide the full cover required from the start of your stay in Spain.

❓ Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about waiting periods, visa requirements and Sanitas Residents plans

What does 'no waiting period' actually mean?

A waiting period is a delay between when your policy starts and when your cover actually kicks in. Most plans make you wait 3–6 months for specialists and up to 12 months for hospital admissions. Sanitas Residents and Residents Platinum have zero waiting periods — your full cover is active on day one of your policy.

Will a waiting period cause my visa to be rejected?

Yes. Spanish consulates require that your health insurance provides comprehensive cover from the first day of your intended stay. A policy with waiting periods technically exists but doesn't actually cover you — which fails the consulate's requirement. Applications are regularly rejected for exactly this reason.

Which plans meet all NLV and DNV requirements?

Only Sanitas Residents (from €67.76/month) and Sanitas Residents Platinum (from €107.23/month). Both have no waiting periods, no copayments, repatriation cover, no coverage limits, and are valid for 12 months and renewable.

What exactly does the consulate check?

The consulate checks that your insurance: has no waiting periods, has no copayments, includes repatriation cover, has no annual coverage limit, is valid for at least 12 months and is renewable, and provides a certificate in Spanish. Sanitas Residents and Residents Platinum meet every one of these requirements.

How quickly can I get my policy certificate?

Your policy certificate can be issued on the same day your cover activates. If you have an upcoming consulate appointment, let us know the date when you submit your quote request and we will make sure your certificate is ready in time.

Are pre-existing conditions covered from day one?

The no waiting period applies to all standard medical conditions. Pre-existing conditions are assessed at application — Sanitas Residents plans are among the most inclusive available. Coverage of specific pre-existing conditions depends on your individual health declaration. Contact us and we'll advise based on your situation.

What is the difference between Residents and Residents Platinum?

Both plans have zero waiting periods, zero copayments, and full NLV/DNV visa approval. Residents Platinum adds international cover worldwide, repatriation as a named benefit, and the Blua digital health platform. Residents starts from €67.76/month and is excellent for most visa applicants; Platinum starts from €107.23/month and suits those who travel internationally or want the highest tier of cover.

Can I renew the policy for my visa renewal?

Yes. Both plans are 12-month policies that renew annually. When you renew your Spanish residency or visa you simply renew your insurance and obtain a fresh certificate. There's no gap in cover and no need to start a new application each time.

Can I get the certificate in English?

Your policy certificate is issued in Spanish, which is what Spanish consulates require. Our English-speaking advisors are familiar with exactly what each consulate needs and can guide you through the submission process. If a certified translation is required for your specific consulate, we can advise on how to obtain one.

Can I cover my family on the same policy?

Yes. You can include your partner, spouse and dependent children on the same Sanitas Residents policy. Each family member gets the same day-one cover, no copayments, and full consulate-approved benefits. Let us know how many people need to be covered when you request your quote.
