Your cover in Spain

Your Everyday Healthcare in Spain

Before the overseas benefits, Sanitas Residents Platinum is first and foremost comprehensive private healthcare in Spain — and that is the cover you will use most. You choose your doctors and hospitals within the Sanitas network, and our English-speaking team helps you use it from day one.

Family medicine and primary care for everyday health needs, with access to Sanitas specialists and medical services across the network.

Specialists

Private consultations with specialists across the Sanitas network.

Diagnostics & imaging

Blood tests, scans and imaging as part of your investigations.

Hospital & surgery

Private hospital admissions, surgery and inpatient treatment.

Emergencies in Spain

Urgent and emergency care through the Sanitas network.

Digital care

Video consultations and digital services through the Sanitas app, for quick advice.

You book directly with Sanitas doctors and hospitals, manage appointments and referrals through the Mi Sanitas app, and keep continuity with the specialists you choose for ongoing conditions. Residents Platinum also includes dental reimbursement of 80% up to €400 per insured person per year in Spain, and pharmacy reimbursement of 50% of eligible prescribed medicines up to €300 per insured person per year, subject to the applicable conditions. Our English-speaking team is on hand to help you use all of it.

Beyond Spain, Residents Platinum adds three benefits for healthcare abroad — USA Cover, worldwide reimbursement and emergency cover while travelling — and each works differently. Here is what to expect from each.

The USA benefit

What USA Cover Adds

USA Cover is the benefit that sets Residents Platinum apart for anyone with a foot in America. It is designed for customers who may need treatment in the United States, where private healthcare works very differently from Spain, and it gives you a genuine, structured route to eligible care there.

  • It has its own scope of covered treatment, set out in the policy.
  • It may require prior authorisation from Sanitas before treatment.
  • It may use an authorised network or process for care in the US.
  • It carries its own limits and exclusions, held separately from your cover in Spain.

USA Cover is particularly relevant for people living in Spain who want access to eligible healthcare in the United States. The treatment, provider and authorisation requirements should be checked before care is arranged.

In other words, it is a defined benefit for care in America rather than an open-ended American health plan. We explain the USA Cover process before you arrange treatment.

Using the benefit

How to Use USA Cover

Using USA Cover is straightforward once you know the sequence:

  • Talk to us first. Tell us about the treatment you are considering before you arrange anything in the US.
  • Check it is covered. We help you confirm whether the treatment falls within the USA Cover benefit.
  • Authorisation from Sanitas. Where prior authorisation is required, Sanitas must approve it before the treatment takes place. We explain the process and help you prepare the information Sanitas needs to decide.
  • Follow the process. Once that is in place, follow the applicable network and documentation process for your treatment.

Keep the confirmations and authorisation documents Sanitas provides. Where reimbursement applies, retain the medical reports, invoices and proof of payment required for the claim. Planning a little ahead is what makes the benefit work smoothly, and it is the part we help you with.

Planned or urgent

Planned Treatment or an Emergency While Travelling

It helps to know which benefit applies to which situation. USA Cover relates to eligible treatment in America that you plan and arrange in advance. If instead you are travelling and something urgent happens, that is where the emergency healthcare abroad benefit comes in — up to €30,000 per insured person per year for urgent or emergency care while you are away from Spain.

For example, an eligible consultation or procedure arranged in advance may fall under USA Cover when its treatment, provider and authorisation requirements are met; needing urgent treatment after a fall or a sudden illness on a trip is what the emergency benefit is there for. Knowing which is which means you approach each one the right way.

Claiming back

How Worldwide Reimbursement Works

Residents Platinum also includes worldwide reimbursement for eligible healthcare outside Spain. In practice, you normally pay the eligible bill yourself and then submit the required documents to claim it back. Platinum reimburses 90% of eligible costs, up to €500,000 per insured person per year, subject to the applicable terms and sub-limits.

Eligible costs are the parts of a bill the policy covers, and some categories of care carry their own sub-limits within that overall annual maximum, so it is worth checking the detail for the treatment you have in mind. Because the benefit is reimbursement-based, keeping clear invoices and proof of payment is what keeps a claim straightforward — and our team can talk you through what to submit.

Medicare

How Medicare Fits Alongside Your Sanitas Cover

If you are an American with Medicare, it helps to know how the two fit together. Medicare generally does not cover routine healthcare in Spain — that is exactly what your Sanitas cover is for. When you are back in the US, how Medicare and Residents Platinum's USA Cover work alongside each other depends on your enrolment and the treatment, and our English-speaking team can talk it through with you.

Who it suits

Who Residents Platinum Suits

Residents Platinum is designed for people who want comprehensive healthcare in Spain with additional options abroad. It may suit you if:

  • You live mainly in Spain but return to America regularly.
  • You want access to eligible treatment outside the Sanitas network.
  • Your family keeps connections with doctors or healthcare abroad.
  • You travel internationally often and want more than emergency-only cover.
  • You would value dental reimbursement and pharmacy reimbursement alongside the overseas benefits.

If that sounds like you, Platinum is the plan to look at — we will tailor a quote to how you actually live and travel.

Choosing your plan

Residents or Residents Platinum?

Both are strong plans, and the choice comes down to how far your healthcare needs reach beyond Spain. If your care stays in Spain, Residents does the job well and keeps your premium lower. If you regularly spend time in America or want wider international healthcare options, Residents Platinum provides the additional overseas benefits.
