What Is Sanitas Residents Platinum?

Residents Platinum is Sanitas Residents for people whose life still extends beyond Spain. It carries the same no-copay Spanish cover and the same certificate for visa and residency applications — then adds reimbursement for treatment outside Spain, higher emergency limits abroad, and dental and pharmacy reimbursement.

That is the whole proposition. Residents answers “I am moving to Spain and will be treated in Spain.” Platinum answers “I am moving to Spain, but I still spend real time somewhere else and I want cover that follows me.”

  • The headline difference. Worldwide reimbursement — 90% of eligible costs up to €500,000 per insured per year. Residents does not have this at all; its cover outside Spain is emergencies only.
  • The second difference. Emergency cover abroad of up to €30,000 per insured per year, against €12,000 on Residents.
  • The everyday differences. 65+ included dental services plus 80% reimbursement up to €400 per insured per year, and pharmacy reimbursement of 50% up to €300 per insured per year.
  • What is identical. Access to the Sanitas network in Spain, the no-copay structure, and the certificate your application needs — issued once the policy is accepted and payment confirmed.

The Visa Version Is Not Automatically the Same Policy

The same warning that applies to Residents applies here, and it matters just as much.

Residents Platinum is configured differently depending on why you are buying it. The version arranged for a visa or residency application is set up to meet what those applications expect — particularly around copayments, waiting periods and the wording that appears on the certificate. A Platinum policy taken out by someone already living in Spain, with no application to satisfy, is not automatically identical.

  • The plan name is not the configuration. A quote found elsewhere under the same product name may not be set up for a visa application.
  • Waiting periods are the usual difference. The visa configuration is structured to avoid gaps that would undermine an application. That is not a universal feature of every Platinum policy.
  • The certificate reflects the policy, not the request. A certificate cannot state cover the underlying policy does not provide. Wrong configuration, wrong document.
  • Tell us the route before you buy. It is the single piece of information that decides how the policy is set up.

Who Should Choose Platinum — and Who Should Not

Platinum is the right answer for a specific kind of person, and an expensive one for everybody else. This is worth being honest about, because the difference in premium buys benefits some people will never use.

Choose Platinum if you...

  • Spend meaningful time outside Spain each year
  • Want access to planned treatment abroad, not just emergencies
  • Keep ties to your home country and may be treated there
  • Travel frequently for work
  • Want reimbursement flexibility rather than network-only care
  • Value the dental and pharmacy reimbursements

Choose Residents instead if you...

  • Will mainly live and be treated in Spain
  • Want the more straightforward, lower-cost visa-focused option
  • Travel abroad occasionally, where emergency cover is enough
  • Prefer the simpler Dental 21 structure and do not need Platinum’s additional dental reimbursement
  • Are older — Platinum’s maximum contracting age is lower than Residents’

The blunt version: if you are moving to Spain and staying put, Platinum is money spent on benefits you will not use. Sanitas Residents is the page you want.

What Happens After You Decide?

The questions that come up once someone has decided Platinum is right.

  • Joining age. Platinum’s maximum contracting age is lower than Residents’, which is the most common reason an applicant is steered to Residents instead. It applies at application — the policy does not end when you reach that age once you hold it.
  • The medical declaration. A health declaration forms part of the application. Outcomes range from acceptance on standard terms, to acceptance with specific exclusions, to a request for more medical information, to a decline. Nobody can tell you the outcome in advance.
  • How reimbursement actually works. Treatment abroad is claimed back rather than billed directly — you pay, then submit the claim. Worth knowing before you rely on it, because it means having funds available at the time.
  • Certificate timing. The certificate is issued after the policy is accepted and payment is confirmed. Build that into your appointment planning.
  • Buying before you arrive. The policy can be arranged from your home country before you move, which is normally necessary for a visa application. The start date is chosen deliberately.
  • Applying without an NIE. You do not need an NIE to request a quote or begin the process.
  • Paying from a foreign card or account. A Spanish bank account is not usually needed to start.
  • Family applications. Everyone is assessed and priced individually and must be named on the documentation. Start dates need to line up across the family.

Mistakes People Make With Platinum

  • Buying Platinum when Residents would do. The most common and most expensive mistake on this page. If you will be treated in Spain, the extra benefits sit unused.
  • Assuming worldwide cover means unlimited cover. It is reimbursement of 90% of eligible costs up to an annual ceiling, not a blank cheque.
  • Not realising treatment abroad is reimbursed, not billed. You pay first and claim back. That changes how you plan for it.
  • Applying without checking the age limit. Platinum’s maximum contracting age is lower than Residents’. Check before you set your heart on it.
  • Buying the standard configuration for a visa application. Tell us the route first.
  • Cancelling existing cover too early. Never cancel anything until the new policy is confirmed and active.

Not sure Platinum is worth the difference?

That is the right question to ask. Send us your route, age and how much time you spend outside Spain, and we will tell you honestly which of the two fits.

Common Questions

FAQ — Sanitas Residents Platinum

Everything expats ask us about Platinum.

Both plans share the same core visa-compliant cover — no copayments, no waiting periods, hospitalisation, repatriation and a certificate issued once your policy has been accepted and payment has been confirmed. Platinum adds four significant upgrades: 90% worldwide reimbursement up to €500,000 (higher reimbursement may apply in some territories, subject to prior authorisation and policy terms), an emergency abroad limit of €30,000/year (vs €12,000 on standard Residents), 65+ included dental services plus 80% reimbursement up to €400 per insured per year (vs Dental 21 with 45+), and pharmacy reimbursement of 50% up to €300 per insured per year.
Yes. Residents Platinum has no copayments, no waiting periods, full hospitalisation and surgery, and repatriation explicitly confirmed in the policy certificate — certificate issued once your policy has been accepted and payment has been confirmed. It is designed to meet the health insurance requirements set by the Spanish MAEC for the NLV and is accepted for Spanish visa and residency applications. The certificate is issued in English and Spanish. Eligibility depends on your nationality and residency route — we confirm which Sanitas product applies to you before you apply.
The worldwide reimbursement benefit lets you use any clinic or specialist in Spain or anywhere in the world and claim back 90% of eligible costs up to €500,000 per year. In the USA, Sanitas reimburses 100% of eligible costs (with prior authorisation) — covering hospital stays up to €443,500, outpatient treatment up to €52,000 and childbirth up to €3,610. This covers consultations, diagnostics, hospitalisation and surgery. You pay upfront, then submit your receipts through the Mi Sanitas app or directly to Sanitas, and reimbursement is processed by bank transfer. Platinum also includes €400 dental reimbursement and €300 pharmacy reimbursement per year.
Yes. Like standard Residents, Platinum requires only your passport — no NIE or Spanish bank account needed. Payment is accepted by international Visa or Mastercard credit card and by bank transfer. You can apply from outside Spain before you move.
Platinum dental is a significant upgrade from Dental 21. Both include the basics — examinations, X-rays, extractions, hygiene, and orthodontic study. Platinum adds fillings and reconstructions, endodontics (root canals), and gum treatments (periodontics) at no charge, plus a 40% discount on non-included services such as crowns and implants. Platinum also includes a €400 annual dental reimbursement for any dental costs outside the Sanitas network.
Yes. If you currently have Sanitas Residents and want to upgrade to Platinum, contact us and we'll handle the upgrade directly with Sanitas. Your waiting periods do not restart, and your medical history transfers. The Platinum benefits — worldwide reimbursement, enhanced dental cover, higher emergency abroad limit — activate immediately on the new policy start date.
Yes. Children aged 0–2 must have at least one other insured adult over 2 on the policy. Children aged 3–18 can be insured individually as long as the policyholder is an adult. The maximum entry age is 64. Ask us about the family pricing when you request your quote.
Residents Platinum can be paid on a biannual (6-monthly) or annual basis — monthly payment is not available. Accepted payment methods include international Visa or Mastercard credit card, SEPA direct debit (EU IBAN) and Spanish IBAN direct debit.
