This is about international benefits within certain Sanitas plans, not a full worldwide medical insurance product.
Overview
If you are an expat in Spain, it is natural to want cover that does not stop at the border. The important thing to understand is how Sanitas international benefits actually work. Most Sanitas cover is designed around private healthcare in Spain — specialists, diagnostics, hospitals and the medical network here. On top of that, certain plans add international benefits: emergency cover while you are travelling, assistance, and repatriation options.
That is different from a full worldwide private medical insurance product. So rather than treating this as global medical insurance, it is more accurate to think of it as Spain-based private cover that may include international emergency and assistance benefits on some plans. What is included, where, and up to what limit depends on the plan you choose, the country involved, authorisation rules and exclusions.
Bupa
Sanitas is part of the Bupa group, one of the larger international health organisations. Some plans may include access to international support or Bupa-linked arrangements, which can be reassuring if you travel or split your time between countries.
It is important not to overstate this. Being part of Bupa does not mean every Sanitas plan is a Bupa Global worldwide policy. If you specifically need full international medical cover — for example because you live across two countries — that is a separate type of product and should be reviewed and confirmed on its own terms. We can talk you through the difference honestly.
Benefits
Where international benefits are included, they are generally centred on emergencies and assistance while travelling rather than planned treatment. Depending on the plan, country, limits, authorisation and exclusions, international benefits may include:
Each of these is subject to the plan and the policy terms. The level of cover, the countries included and the limits differ between plans, so the relevant section of your policy is what determines what you can actually rely on.
Repatriation
Repatriation is one of the benefits expats ask about most. Where it is medically necessary and covered by the policy, repatriation or medical transport may be arranged to Spain or another appropriate destination — subject to authorisation, medical criteria, limits and policy terms.
It is not an automatic, unlimited promise. The decision is based on medical need and the rules of the specific plan, and it usually has to be authorised. If repatriation matters to you, we will help you check exactly how it is handled on the plan you are considering.
Scenario
A common situation is needing urgent care while away from Spain — a sudden illness or an accident on a trip. On a plan that includes international emergency benefits, this may mean access to emergency assistance, help coordinating urgent treatment, and, where medically necessary and authorised, repatriation or medical transport back to Spain.
The detail still depends on the plan, the country and the policy terms. The point of checking before you travel is so you know what your plan does — and does not — cover, and so you have the right assistance number to hand if something happens.
Plans
International benefits differ from plan to plan. The table below is a general guide — the exact benefits, limits and conditions are set out in each plan’s policy wording and can change, so confirm the current terms before you decide.
| Plan | International / emergency benefits | Visa route suitability |
|---|---|---|
| Sanitas Residents | Emergency cover while travelling may be included, subject to policy terms | Commonly used for NLV and DNV applications, subject to terms and certificate requirements |
| Sanitas Residents Platinum | Broader cover with international benefits, including worldwide emergency cover, subject to policy terms | Commonly used for NLV and DNV applications, subject to terms |
| Sanitas International Students | Worldwide emergency cover up to a policy limit, subject to terms | Designed for student visa applications, subject to terms and certificate requirements |
| Sanitas Más Salud / Sin Copago | Primarily Spain-based private cover; emergency assistance abroad may be limited — check the policy | General healthcare and EU residency; not the visa product for non-EU routes |
If you are applying for a Spanish visa or residency, the priority is a suitable Spain-based policy. International benefits are a useful extra, but they do not by themselves make a policy visa-suitable.
