Get a Quote →It is completely understandable to look for cheap student health insurance for a Spanish student visa. But the cheapest policy is not always the right policy. A cheap policy may include co-payments, deductibles, reimbursement-only cover, weak certificate wording or missing repatriation wording — any of which can cause problems with your visa. We help students find suitable Sanitas cover that balances cost, visa suitability and practical private healthcare access.
Is it accepted
Cheap student health insurance may be accepted only if it meets the Spanish student visa requirements. The price is not the main issue — the important question is whether the policy and certificate are suitable.
For Spanish student visa applications, the policy is usually expected to provide suitable private medical cover in Spain from an insurer authorised to operate in Spain, often with no co-payments, no deductibles, no reimbursement-only structure, no waiting periods where required, hospitalisation, emergency care, specialists and diagnostics, cover for the full study or visa period, a Spanish-language certificate where required, and repatriation wording where required by the consulate.
If a cheap policy does not meet these requirements, it may not be suitable for your application.
Risky
The cheapest policies often reduce the monthly premium by limiting the cover or adding conditions. This may include co-payments, deductibles or excesses, reimbursement-only cover, lower medical limits, emergency-only cover, travel-insurance wording, waiting periods, no proper visa certificate, missing repatriation wording, or an insurer not clearly authorised to operate in Spain.
A policy may be cheap, but if the consulate does not accept it, you may need to buy another policy and lose valuable time before your appointment.
Cheap vs affordable
There is a big difference between cheap and affordable. Cheap usually means the lowest price. Affordable should mean good value, suitable cover and a policy that supports your visa application properly.
A policy is not truly affordable if it leads to visa delays, extra document requests, certificate corrections, rejected insurance evidence, having to buy a second policy, problems at renewal, or poor access to private healthcare in Spain. See affordable student health insurance.
Co-payments
Some cheap student policies include co-payments — a small amount you pay when you use certain services. A low-copay policy is still not the same as a no-copay policy, and if the consulate requires full cover without co-payments, it may not be accepted.
A deductible or excess means you pay part of the cost before the insurer pays, which can also be a problem where full cover is expected. Reimbursement insurance, where you pay upfront and claim back later, is also risky for visa applications because Spanish student visas usually expect direct private healthcare access in Spain.
Travel insurance
Many students try to save money by buying travel insurance. Usually this is not suitable for a Spanish student visa, because travel insurance is designed for short trips and emergencies, not for living in Spain as a student. Even if travel insurance is cheaper, it may not solve the visa requirement.
Certificate
The certificate is one of the most important parts of your student visa file. Even if the policy seems good, the certificate must clearly show the right information. A cheap policy may cause problems if the certificate does not mention cover in Spain, does not confirm no co-payments, does not include the correct dates, is not in Spanish where required, does not mention repatriation where required, looks like travel insurance, or does not match your passport details. See the student visa certificate page.
Sanitas
For eligible students aged 14 to 35 coming to Spain for a study stay from 3 to 14 months, Sanitas International Students is usually the first option to check. If the student is over 35, staying longer, applying with dependants or on a non-standard route, Sanitas Residents may be more suitable, subject to current terms and eligibility.
Sanitas International Students may require valid proof of enrolment, matriculation or acceptance from a recognised university, school, language academy or educational institution. Where suitable proof of studies cannot be provided, or where the student does not fit the age, duration or route requirements, Sanitas Residents or another Sanitas option may need to be reviewed. Sanitas International Students may be a cost-effective option for many standard student cases. Sanitas Residents may cost more, but it can be better value for older students, renewals, dependants or longer stays. The right option depends on your profile, not just the monthly price.
