Get a Quote →If you are applying for a Spanish student visa, it is natural to look for affordable health insurance. But the cheapest option is not always the safest. For many non-EU students, the insurance is expected to provide suitable private medical cover in Spain, often with no co-payments, no deductibles and the correct certificate wording. We help students find suitable Sanitas cover that balances price, visa suitability and practical private healthcare access.
What it means
Affordable student health insurance should not simply mean the lowest monthly premium. For a Spanish student visa, affordable should mean suitable for the visa route, full private medical cover in Spain, no co-payments where required, correct certificate wording, cover for the required study period, and good value for the level of cover provided.
A policy that is cheap but rejected by the consulate is not affordable. It becomes more expensive if you then need to buy another policy, delay your application or change cover before renewal.
Cheapest risk
Cheap student insurance can look attractive online, especially when students compare monthly prices. However, cheaper policies may include co-payments, deductibles, reimbursement-only cover, low medical limits, emergency-only cover, travel-insurance wording, missing repatriation wording, or weak certificate wording.
For visa purposes, these details matter. A cheap policy can become a problem if the certificate does not meet the requirements. See why cheap is not always suitable.
What it includes
Affordable student visa health insurance should still meet the visa requirements.
For Spanish student visa applications, the policy is usually expected to provide suitable private medical cover in Spain from an insurer authorised to operate in Spain, often with no co-payments, no deductibles, no reimbursement-only structure, no waiting periods where required, hospitalisation, emergency care, specialists and diagnostics, cover for the full study or visa period, a Spanish-language certificate where required, and repatriation wording where required by the consulate.
The aim is not to buy the most expensive policy. The aim is to buy the right policy at a sensible price.
Not travel
Many students try to reduce costs by buying travel insurance. Usually this is not suitable for a Spanish student visa, because travel insurance is designed for short trips and emergencies, not for living in Spain as a student for several months or longer. It may only cover emergencies, include deductibles, work by reimbursement, have low limits, not be issued by an insurer authorised in Spain, or not provide a suitable certificate. Even if cheaper, it may not solve the visa requirement.
No-copay value
For Spanish student visa applications, no-copay cover is usually the safest option. A low monthly premium with co-payments may seem affordable at first, but the student may pay extra when using services, and the policy may not meet the expectations of the authority reviewing the file. For many students, no-copay private medical insurance is the safer option because it is clearer and easier to document.
Sanitas
For eligible students aged 14 to 35 coming to Spain for a study stay from 3 to 14 months, Sanitas International Students is usually the first option to check. If the student is over 35, staying longer, applying with dependants or on a non-standard route, Sanitas Residents may be more suitable, subject to current terms and eligibility.
Sanitas International Students may require valid proof of enrolment, matriculation or acceptance from a recognised university, school, language academy or educational institution. Where suitable proof of studies cannot be provided, or where the student does not fit the age, duration or route requirements, Sanitas Residents or another Sanitas option may need to be reviewed. For standard student cases, Sanitas International Students is often a practical and cost-conscious first option. Sanitas Residents may cost more, but it can be better value for older students, renewals, dependants or longer stays where the standard student product does not fit. See the full comparison.
Good value
A good-value student health insurance policy is not always the cheapest. It should fit the student's real needs and application route. For visa purposes, good value usually means suitable medical cover in Spain, no-copayment structure where required, correct certificate wording, suitable policy dates, and access to a recognised private medical network. Students should also consider how easy it is to get support in English, how quickly documents can be arranged and whether the policy actually supports the application.
Cost factors
The cost depends on several factors, including age, product type, cover level, whether the policy is student-specific or residence-style, whether dependants are included, whether the policy is annual or monthly, and any medical questionnaire or underwriting requirements where applicable.
A younger standard student may have different options from an over-35 student, a renewal applicant or a family case. This is why it is better to request a quote based on your real situation rather than relying on a generic online price. See student health insurance cost.
Payment
Many international students need to arrange health insurance before arrival because the certificate is needed for the visa appointment, when they may not yet have a Spanish bank account, Spanish IBAN, NIE or TIE card. Spanish Health Insurance can help arrange Sanitas student cover with credit card payment options where available. This is especially useful for students from the UK, USA, Canada, Australia and other non-EU countries.
Many students also arrange cover without an NIE using passport details. Being able to pay by credit card can make affordable student insurance easier to arrange before your visa appointment.
Value over time
A slightly more expensive policy can sometimes be better value if it provides the correct certificate, no-copayment structure and cover dates from the start. If a cheaper policy is rejected or questioned, the student may need to buy a second policy, delay the visa file or pay for changes close to the appointment date. For student visa insurance, value should be judged by whether the policy works for the application as well as by the monthly premium.
