Student Health Insurance Before Arrival in Spain

Many international students need to arrange health insurance before they arrive in Spain, because the certificate is often required before the student visa can be approved. At that stage you may still be living abroad without a Spanish address, bank account, NIE or TIE card. Spanish Health Insurance can help arrange suitable Sanitas student cover before arrival — policies can normally be contracted in advance of the required start date, with credit card payment options where available.

Can you

Can I Arrange Student Health Insurance Before Arriving in Spain?

Yes. In many cases, international students can arrange student health insurance before arriving in Spain. In fact, many non-EU students have to do this because the certificate is needed before the visa is approved.

You may need cover before arrival if you are applying for a Spanish student visa, preparing documents for a consulate appointment, uploading your visa file, waiting for visa approval, coming for university studies or a language course, arranging insurance for dependants, or over 35 and applying through a student route. The key is making sure the policy start date, certificate wording and payment method match your application needs.

How early

How Early Can Student Health Insurance Be Contracted?

Student health insurance can normally be contracted in advance of the required start date — commonly up to around 6 months early, depending on the product and applicant profile. This is useful because students often need time to prepare their visa documents before travelling.

For example, you may need to arrange insurance several weeks or months before your visa appointment, course start date, planned arrival, student residence period or TIE appointment. Arranging cover early can help avoid last-minute certificate problems, payment delays or document corrections.

Why early

Why Arranging Insurance Early Can Help

Leaving student health insurance until the last minute can create unnecessary stress. Arranging cover early means you can receive the certificate before your appointment, check the policy dates, confirm no-copay and repatriation wording, correct any passport details, arrange payment before deadlines, and compare Sanitas International Students and Sanitas Residents properly. Insurance is one of the documents students often think will be quick, but if the certificate is wrong or incomplete, it can hold up the whole application.

Start date

Does the Policy Start Immediately?

Not necessarily. A policy can often be contracted before arrival with a future start month, depending on the product and insurer process. This means you may be able to arrange the policy now, receive the certificate for your visa file, and set the cover to start from the date required by your application.

The start date may be based on your expected arrival date, course start date, the date required by the consulate, the full academic year, or your full intended stay. Do not assume the start date should simply be today — it should match the visa and course requirements.

Cert before start

Can I Get the Certificate Before the Policy Starts?

Yes, in many cases. Students often need the certificate before the policy start date because the certificate is part of the visa application. The certificate should normally show the future start month and the policy validity period. This is useful where your course starts in September but your visa appointment is in June, July or August. Because student health insurance can normally be contracted in advance, students can often prepare the certificate well before travelling.

No NIE / no bank

Arranging Cover Before You Have an NIE or Spanish Bank Account

Many international students do not have an NIE when they arrange their first policy, because the certificate is needed before the visa is granted. Depending on the product and applicant profile, the policy may often be arranged using passport details first, then updated once the NIE or TIE is issued. See student cover without an NIE.

Spanish Health Insurance can also help students arrange Sanitas cover before they have a Spanish bank account or Spanish IBAN, with credit card payment options where available.

What it should include

What Student Health Insurance Before Arrival Should Include

Whether you arrange it before or after arrival, student visa health insurance should normally meet the visa requirements. For Spanish student visa applications, the policy is usually expected to provide suitable private medical cover in Spain from an insurer authorised to operate in Spain, often with no co-payments, no deductibles, no reimbursement-only structure, no waiting periods where required, hospitalisation, emergency care, specialists and diagnostics, cover for the full study or visa period, a Spanish-language certificate where required, and repatriation wording where required by the consulate.

Which plan

Sanitas International Students and Sanitas Residents Before Arrival

For eligible students aged 14 to 35 coming to Spain for a study stay from 3 to 14 months, Sanitas International Students is usually the first option to check. If the student is over 35, staying longer, applying with dependants or on a non-standard route, Sanitas Residents may be more suitable, subject to current terms and eligibility.

Sanitas International Students may require valid proof of enrolment, matriculation or acceptance from a recognised university, school, language academy or educational institution. Where suitable proof of studies cannot be provided, or where the student does not fit the age, duration or route requirements, Sanitas Residents or another Sanitas option may need to be reviewed. Both routes can often be arranged before arrival where available and appropriate, helping students and families prepare their visa documents in advance. Sanitas Residents may be reviewed for over-35 students, longer stays, renewals, dependants or students planning to remain in Spain after studying.
