Health Insurance for an Intra-Company Transfer to Spain

An intra-company transfer to Spain under Law 14/2013 needs healthcare cover. Depending on how the transfer is set up, that can be public cover through Spanish Social Security, employer-arranged cover, or an individual private policy. This page explains the choice and the individual cover a transferring employee receives — focused on your healthcare, not corporate administration.

In short

How Cover Works on an Intra-Company Transfer

Policy terms, acceptance, waiting periods and documentation requirements can change, so always check the current Sanitas wording and your personal policy conditions (and any local requirements) before relying on cover or applying.

The intra-company transfer route sits under Law 14/2013, which sets the health-cover requirement as public cover or private insurance from an insurer authorised in Spain. On an ICT you usually remain employed within your company group, and how healthcare is arranged depends on the set-up: if the transfer registers you with Spanish Social Security you may be covered by the public system; if not, or before that is active, private cover is the route. Some employers also arrange cover as part of the package.

Employer cover

If Your Company Provides Cover

Where your employer arranges health cover, it is worth checking a few practical points before relying on it for the transfer: that it is issued by an insurer authorised in Spain, that it is suitable for your route and certificate, that it starts in time for your application, and that it extends to any family joining you. Where employer cover does not fit or does not cover the family, an individual Sanitas policy can fill the gap. We keep this to the cover itself, not corporate administration.

Which product

The Individual Cover a Transferee Receives

Where private cover is the route, Sanitas Residents or Residents Platinum provide full, no-copayment cover through the Sanitas network in Spain, from an insurer authorised in Spain, with the international features on Platinum if you travel. This is individual cover for you and your family; we do not attach it to a named corporate scheme unless a current product genuinely fits your situation. See the Sanitas medical network and the work visa health insurance page.

Family

Cover for an Accompanying Family

Where a partner and children transfer too, each needs suitable cover and their own certificate, matched to how they are included. A family can be arranged together, with each member's cover assessed for their own place in the application — see health insurance for family members.

Posted workers

Posted Workers and the Certificate of Coverage

There is one feature that makes intra-company transfers different from an ordinary local hire, and it decides whether you need private cover: posting. Where a social-security agreement applies between your home country and Spain — the United States and the United Kingdom both have one — a transferred employee can be “posted” and stay in their home country's social-security system for a set period, evidenced by a certificate of coverage. If you hold one, you are generally not affiliated to Spanish Social Security for that period, which usually means you would not receive Spanish public healthcare through your employment.

The practical consequence is straightforward: posted transferees typically need private health cover in Spain, because the public route through employment is not open to them while they remain in their home system. The certificate of coverage itself is obtained through your employer and your home social-security authority, not through us — but if you are posted, private cover is very often the answer, and we arrange it.
