Health Insurance for Family Members on a Spanish Visa

When a family applies together, each family member usually needs suitable cover for their route, and each insured person gets their own certificate for the application. This page explains how cover works for spouses, children and dependants, how a family plan fits, and what the individual certificate shows — so every member's evidence is in order.

In short

How Family Cover Works

Policy terms, acceptance, waiting periods and documentation requirements can change, so always check the current Sanitas wording and your personal policy conditions (and any local requirements) before relying on cover or applying.

For a family application, the health-insurance requirement applies to each family member being included, not just the main applicant. That can be arranged as one family policy covering everyone, or as suitable cover for each person, depending on the route and the plan. Whichever way, each insured person's cover is looked at for their own place in the application. If you are joining a relative already resident, see also family reunification health insurance.

Each member

Cover for Spouses, Children and Dependants

A spouse or partner, children and dependent relatives each need cover appropriate to how they are included in the application. Children are generally covered under the family's cover; a spouse or partner needs cover in their own right; dependent relatives are included where the route allows. The route the family is applying under shapes what each member needs — a non-lucrative family, a digital nomad family and a family reuniting with a resident are not identical, so we match the cover to your route.

Family plan

Using a Family Plan

A family plan such as Más Salud Familias can cover a family under one policy, which is often the simplest arrangement for general or EU-residency cover. For visa routes, Residents or Residents Platinum cover is arranged per applicant. Either way, every included member has cover and their own certificate. We help you choose the arrangement that fits your route and coordinate it for the whole family.

Certificate

The Certificate for Each Family Member

The insurance certificate is issued individually — one per insured person. Each member's certificate contains that person's identity, the policy details, the cover dates and the relevant cover information, so the authority can see that each named applicant is covered. A single certificate naming only the main applicant is not usually enough for a family application; each member needs their own. We prepare a certificate for every insured member for the application. We do not publish a specimen certificate or its exact wording. For what a certificate should show generally, see the visa certificate page.

Common points

Points Families Often Ask About

  • Each included member needs cover — not just the main applicant
  • Children are generally covered under the family's cover
  • A spouse or partner needs cover in their own right
  • Each insured person gets their own certificate
  • Each member's evidence is assessed individually by the authority
  • A family plan can cover everyone under one policy

If one member has a health history to declare, acceptance and terms are assessed for that person; tell us and we will handle it sensitively as part of arranging the family's cover.

Mixed families

When a Family Spans EU and Non-EU Members

Not every family is on one route. A common case is a family where one partner is an EU citizen and the other is not — for example a Spanish or Irish national married to a US or UK citizen — or children with a different nationality from a parent. Here the members can sit on different footings: the EU citizen registers residence as an EU national, while the non-EU partner may join through an EU family-member route or a separate residence route. The healthcare evidence follows each person's own footing, so the cover and certificate are arranged member by member rather than assuming the whole family is treated identically.

In practice that can mean a no-copay comprehensive plan for the EU side and visa-suitable cover for a non-EU member, or a single family plan where everyone's route allows it. We look at each member's position and arrange cover that fits, coordinated as one family. See family reunification health insurance where a non-EU member is joining a resident.

Evidence in order

Getting Every Member's Evidence in Order

The aim for a family application is simple: each included person is covered, and each has a certificate that shows it. To arrange that cleanly we usually need, for each member:

  • Their identity details as they appear on the application
  • How they are included — main applicant, spouse or partner, child, or dependent relative
  • Their route or footing, where it differs within the family (for example a mixed EU/non-EU family)
  • Any health history to declare, handled sensitively and assessed per person
  • The dates the cover needs to run for their part of the application

With that, we arrange suitable cover for each member and prepare an individual certificate for every insured person, so the whole family's evidence lines up. The quote form below is the place to tell us who is applying.

Important Information

Important: Sanitas policy benefits, exclusions, waiting periods, authorisation rules, medical network access and visa suitability can change. Cover also depends on the specific policy chosen, the applicant’s personal terms and conditions, health declaration, acceptance terms and any individual exclusions applied by Sanitas. Always check the actual current Sanitas policy wording, certificate wording, general terms and personal policy conditions before relying on any cover or making a visa, medical or financial decision.

FAQs

Family Cover & Certificates — Common Questions

Common questions about health insurance for family members on a Spanish visa and the individual certificate each member needs.

Each family member included in the application needs suitable cover. That can be one family policy covering everyone or cover for each person, but every included member must be covered — not just the main applicant.
No. The certificate is issued individually — one per insured person — each showing that member's details and cover. A certificate naming only the main applicant is not usually enough for a family application.
Yes. A family plan such as Más Salud Familias can cover a family under one policy. Each member still has their own certificate for the application.
Children are generally covered under the family's cover. Each covered child still appears on their own certificate for the application.
Yes. A spouse or partner included in the application needs cover in their own right, with their own certificate.
For general or EU-residency cover, a family plan such as Más Salud Familias is often simplest. For visa routes, Residents or Residents Platinum cover is arranged per applicant. We match it to your route.
Acceptance and terms are assessed for that individual. Tell us and we will handle it as part of arranging the family's cover; the insurer decides the terms for that person.
Each member's cover and certificate are looked at for their own place in the application, so evidence is effectively assessed per person, even under one family policy.
Family reunification is its own route. See our family reunification page; the certificate principle is the same — one per insured person.
