Get a Quote →If you are an EU citizen working for an employer in Spain, you are normally registered with Spanish Social Security through your job — which gives you access to public healthcare. Private Sanitas cover is optional cover you can add on top, not something automatically required for your residence. Here is when it makes sense, and how to get a personalised quote.
Get an individual quote Talk to usWhen you work for a Spanish employer, your employer registers you with Spanish Social Security (Seguridad Social) and pays contributions on your behalf. That gives you and your registered dependants access to the public health system. As an EU citizen, this is normally the healthcare route that supports your residence — you do not automatically need a private policy to live and work in Spain.
Private health insurance is therefore supplementary for most employed EU citizens: something people choose for faster specialist appointments, access to private hospitals and clinics, a wider choice of doctor and English-speaking support — alongside their public cover, not instead of it.
Not for the healthcare requirement itself, when Social Security already covers you. Many EU employees in Spain still choose private cover for the practical benefits it adds:
If your job has not begun, or your Social Security registration is still being processed, there can be a short period before your public cover is active. Some EU citizens take out private cover to bridge that gap, so they are looked after from the day they arrive.
Registration requirements vary by situation. If you are registering as an EU resident before your employment and Social Security are active, and you cannot yet evidence public cover, private health insurance may be needed for that step — it depends on your residence position and the requirements applied to your registration, and the competent authority makes the final decision.
Where private cover is useful, these are the Sanitas options we usually consider for EU employees. All are quote-only — the right choice depends on your situation, and every quote is personalised.
Comprehensive no-copay private healthcare through the Sanitas network — usually the first option we consider for individual EU residents.
