Student Health Insurance for Families and Dependants in Spain

If you are applying for a Spanish student visa and want to bring your spouse, partner or children, health insurance needs to be checked carefully. A policy that works for the main student may not automatically be the best option for dependants. We help students and families review suitable Sanitas cover, which may include Sanitas International Students for the main applicant and Sanitas Residents or another Sanitas option for accompanying family members.

Can you

Can Students Bring Family Members to Spain?

Some Spanish student visa routes may allow family members to accompany the main student, depending on the applicant's nationality, course, duration, financial situation and visa requirements. Family members may include a spouse, civil or registered partner, children, and dependants linked to the main student's application.

The exact requirements can vary depending on the consulate, visa centre and immigration route, so students should always check the official requirements before applying. Health insurance is usually one of the key documents that must be arranged correctly for each applicant.

Health insurance is only one part of the family application; financial means, relationship documents, course type and consulate requirements should also be checked separately.

Why care

Why Family Student Visa Health Insurance Needs Care

Family cases are more complicated than single-student applications. The main student may be eligible for a student-specific policy, but dependants may not always fit the same product. This can create issues around product eligibility, certificate wording, policy dates, no-copay requirements, repatriation wording, children's cover and renewal requirements. For this reason, family applications should not be handled as if everyone is a standard single student.

Everyone

Does Every Family Member Need Health Insurance?

In many student visa family applications, every applicant will normally need suitable health insurance. This means the main student, spouse or partner, and children may each need their own certificate or to be clearly included on a family policy.

For Spanish student visa applications, the policy is usually expected to provide suitable private medical cover in Spain from an insurer authorised to operate in Spain, often with no co-payments, no deductibles, no reimbursement-only structure, no waiting periods where required, hospitalisation, emergency care, specialists and diagnostics, cover for the full study or visa period, a Spanish-language certificate where required, and repatriation wording where required by the consulate.

If one family member's insurance is missing or unsuitable, the application may be delayed.

Main student

Can the Main Student Use Sanitas International Students?

Sanitas International Students may be suitable for the main student where they meet the product requirements — enrolled at a recognised institution, with valid proof of enrolment or matriculation, applying through a student visa route, and needing a student-focused certificate. Sanitas International Students may require valid proof of enrolment, matriculation or acceptance from a recognised university, school, language academy or educational institution. Where suitable proof of studies cannot be provided, or where the student does not fit the age, duration or route requirements, Sanitas Residents or another Sanitas option may need to be reviewed.

However, the student product should not be assumed automatically for the whole family.

Dependants

Can Dependants Use Sanitas International Students?

Dependants may not always fit a student-specific product. A dependant spouse, partner or child may be accompanying the student but may not be a student themselves, which means they may need a different private health insurance route.

In many family cases, Sanitas Residents may be more suitable for dependants because it is a broader private healthcare route often used for visa and residence-style applications. Before arranging the policy, check whether each family member fits the product requirements and whether the certificate will support the application.

Whole family

When Sanitas Residents May Be Better for the Whole Family

Sanitas Residents may be the better option where the family needs a more robust and consistent insurance structure — for example where the main student is over 35, the family is applying together, the stay is longer term, the student is renewing, there are children included, the applicant wants stronger certificate wording, or the family may remain in Spain after the course.

In some cases, using Sanitas Residents for the whole family may be simpler than using one product for the student and another for dependants.

Spouses & children

Health Insurance for Spouses, Partners and Children

A spouse or partner accompanying a student may need suitable private health insurance in Spain, with a certificate that shows their full name, policy number, policy dates, medical cover in Spain, no co-payments where required, and repatriation wording where required. A dependant adult should not be treated as an afterthought.

Children included in a family application may also need suitable cover. When arranging cover for children, check whether the child can be included on the family policy, whether the certificate lists the child correctly, whether paediatric and emergency care are included, and whether the policy dates match the family application. Children's names and dates of birth should be checked carefully on all documents.

Certificates

Family Health Insurance Certificates

For family applications, certificates must be clear. Depending on the insurer and visa requirements, each family member may need an individual certificate, or a family certificate listing all insured applicants clearly. If a family member is missing from the certificate, the application may be delayed.

Where repatriation wording is required, it should apply clearly to each insured person, not only the main student. For visa applications, no-copay cover is usually the safest option for each applicant.

No NIE & payment

Family Cover Without an NIE, and Paying Before Arrival

Many students and family members need to arrange health insurance before they have an NIE. In many cases, policies can be arranged using passport details first, depending on the product and applicant profile. Make sure each person's name matches their passport exactly. See student cover without an NIE.

Many international students need to arrange health insurance before arrival because the certificate is needed for the visa appointment, when they may not yet have a Spanish bank account, Spanish IBAN, NIE or TIE card. Spanish Health Insurance can help arrange Sanitas student cover with credit card payment options where available. This is especially useful for students from the UK, USA, Canada, Australia and other non-EU countries.

Renewals & long-term

Family Renewals and Longer-Term Plans

If the student and family are renewing their stay in Spain, the insurance should remain active and suitable for the renewal period, with updated certificates, suitable cover for every dependant and no gap in cover. See student visa renewal health insurance.

Some student families are not coming to Spain for a short study experience only — they may later renew, modify to another route, or remain in Spain after the course. If that is the plan, Sanitas Residents may often be more practical than a short-term student-focused policy.

Mistakes

Common Mistakes in Student Family Insurance

  • Assuming the student policy automatically covers dependants
  • Forgetting that each family member needs suitable insurance
  • Buying travel insurance for dependants
  • Choosing policies with co-payments
  • Using reimbursement-only cover
  • Missing repatriation wording for dependants
  • Not checking children's details on the certificate
  • Using the wrong policy dates
  • Letting cover expire before renewal
  • Waiting until the visa appointment week

Important information

Important Information

Important: Sanitas policy benefits, exclusions, waiting periods, authorisation rules, medical network access and visa suitability can change. Cover also depends on the specific policy chosen, the applicant’s personal terms and conditions, health declaration, acceptance terms and any individual exclusions applied by Sanitas. Always check the actual current Sanitas policy wording, certificate wording, general terms and personal policy conditions before relying on any cover or making a visa, medical or financial decision.

Applying for a Spanish Student Visa with Family?

Tell us about each family member — names, dates of birth, nationalities, relationship, visa route, location and any medical history — and we will help arrange suitable Sanitas cover for the main student, spouse, partner and children where appropriate. The main student's Sanitas International Students policy normally requires proof of studies; dependants are often best suited to Sanitas Residents. Please check the actual current policy terms and your personal conditions before purchasing or using any Sanitas policy. Policies change and individual terms can vary.
