Overview
The initial tarjeta comunitaria is usually valid for up to five years. As long as the qualifying relationship and the EU citizen’s circumstances continue, the card can be renewed; after five years of legal residence as a family member, you may qualify for a permanent card. The exact conditions depend on your situation — confirm them with the authorities.
At renewal
At renewal the authorities generally check that the basis for the card still holds — the relationship, the EU citizen’s residence and status, and (where it was required) continued health cover and resources. Keep your documentation current, and avoid gaps in any cover that was a condition of the card.
Permanent
After five years of continuous legal residence as a family member, you may obtain a permanent residence card, which is more stable and generally less conditional. Healthcare entitlement often becomes clearer at this stage, especially where the EU citizen or the family member is by then in the public system — but confirm your position rather than assuming.
Healthcare
Where private health insurance was part of your basis for the card, keep it in force across renewals and avoid gaps, since a lapse can complicate a renewal. If your situation changes — for example the EU citizen starts working and the family joins the public system — the private requirement may fall away, though many keep cover for speed and choice. We can adjust or continue your Sanitas cover as your situation evolves. See the health insurance page.
