Get a Quote →Choosing the right Sanitas health insurance on the Costa del Sol — from Málaga city and Marbella to Estepona, Fuengirola, Mijas and Nerja. We help British, American, international and Northern European expats match a suitable plan to their route, subject to current Sanitas terms.
Overview
The Costa del Sol is one of the largest private-healthcare and expat markets in the whole of Spain. Málaga province draws an exceptionally international population — British, American, Scandinavian, Dutch, German, Middle Eastern and many other nationalities — spanning retirees, families, remote workers, entrepreneurs and higher-income residents. Demand for English-speaking, high-quality private healthcare is correspondingly strong.
That breadth means there is no single ‘best’ plan for everyone here: a retired British couple in Mijas, an American family in Marbella and a remote worker in Málaga city will each have different needs. What they share is that the right Sanitas plan depends on residency route, age and health, and the local medical network — which this page works through for the Costa del Sol.
Local area
Expats are spread the length of the Costa del Sol, from the Axarquía east of Málaga to the western stretch towards Sotogrande. The practical healthcare question is which Sanitas doctors and facilities are included near you:
Málaga city has grown into a major hub for remote workers, professionals and families as well as a strong tourist and cultural centre, with good private healthcare provision. East of the city, Nerja and the Axarquía are popular with British and Northern European residents, including many retirees.
Marbella, San Pedro de Alcántara, Estepona and Manilva form the international, higher-end stretch of the coast, popular with British, American, Scandinavian and Middle Eastern residents, families and second-home owners. Private healthcare demand here is particularly high.
The central coast — Fuengirola, Mijas, Benalmádena and Torremolinos — has long-established British and Northern European communities, with a large retiree and family population. Wherever you settle, confirm the local cuadro médico for your postcode before choosing a plan.
Visa routes
If you are moving to the Costa del Sol from outside the EU, your residency route usually decides which Sanitas plan fits. The plan must match the route — we never blur the two.
Many people who settle in the Costa del Sol do so on the Non-Lucrative Visa, especially retirees and those not working in Spain. The NLV generally requires full private health insurance with no copayments and no deductible. Sanitas Residents and Residents Platinum are the plans commonly used for the NLV, subject to terms and certificate requirements. See our NLV quote page or the NLV health insurance guide.
If you are working remotely from the Costa del Sol, the Digital Nomad Visa route applies. Depending on whether private insurance is your main proof or supplementary to Spanish social security, DNV health insurance cover is usually arranged through Residents or Residents Platinum. Start with the DNV quote page.
EU citizens settling in the Costa del Sol register through the green residence certificate (CUE) rather than a visa. Where private cover is needed, a no-copay Más Salud plan is usually the fit — not the visa-specific Residents products. See EU residency certificate cover and health insurance for EU citizens.
Who it suits
The Costa del Sol has a large retiree population. Non-EU retirees usually apply on the Non-Lucrative Visa, with Sanitas Residents or Residents Platinum the plans commonly used; Sanitas Único is designed for many over-60s wanting general private cover. Age limits matter most at application; once accepted and contracted, the policy continues. See our retirees guide.
Marbella and Málaga attract a significant American and international community. US and other non-EU citizens usually need full private cover for their visa route — Residents or Residents Platinum — and US public or travel insurance is not normally accepted for a Spanish residence visa. See our guide for Americans in Spain.
Málaga has become a genuine remote-work hub. If you are working remotely from the Costa del Sol, the Digital Nomad Visa route applies, with cover usually arranged through Residents or Residents Platinum. See our remote workers guide and DNV quote page.
Families are well served, with Más Salud Familias built for the general and EU-residency route and Residents/Residents Platinum for non-EU visa families, each member named on the certificate. Cover varies by plan, so check the particular policy details.
Families
Families relocating to the Costa del Sol often want cover that includes children, paediatric access and maternity where relevant. Más Salud Familias is built for families on the general and EU-residency route, while families applying on a non-EU visa are usually covered through Residents or Residents Platinum — each family member is assessed and named on the certificate. Cover varies by plan, so always check the particular policy details. Our family health insurance guide explains the options.
If different family members are on different routes — for example an EU citizen married to a non-EU partner — the right answer can differ per person. We can review the whole family together so nobody is left with a gap or the wrong product.
Network
Wherever you settle in the Costa del Sol, the most important practical step is to check the local Sanitas cuadro médico — the directory of doctors, specialists, clinics and hospitals included on your policy — for your specific town or postcode. Coverage and the exact network can vary between areas and between plans, and they can change, so this should be confirmed before you buy rather than assumed.
We are English-speaking Sanitas specialists, so we can help you read the cuadro médico for where you live, explain how to find a doctor near you, and point you to the right routing pages. We do not, however, promise access to any specific hospital, specialist, clinic or appointment — that always depends on the current network and your policy terms.
Hospitals
The Costa del Sol has one of the strongest private-healthcare provisions in Spain, and Sanitas works through its cuadro médico — a network of doctors, clinics and hospitals — rather than us promising any single named facility. Access depends on the cuadro médico for your area and your policy terms.
Because the available network can differ between, say, Málaga city, the western coast and the Axarquía, the safest step is to check the current cuadro médico for your specific town or postcode before buying — we can help in English. Access to particular specialists, diagnostics or hospital treatment is always subject to the network and your policy terms. Where useful, Sanitas Blua digital health can add online access on eligible plans, subject to terms.
Compare plans
For non-EU visa applicants in the Costa del Sol, the main decision is usually between Sanitas Residents and Residents Platinum. Both are comprehensive and commonly used for the NLV and DNV; Platinum adds broader international benefits. The right choice depends on how much you travel and how wide you want your cover — all subject to current Sanitas terms and personal conditions.
| Consideration | Sanitas Residents | Sanitas Residents Platinum |
|---|---|---|
| Typical use | NLV and DNV applications, subject to terms | NLV and DNV applications where broader cover is wanted, subject to terms |
| Cover focus | Comprehensive private cover in Spain | Comprehensive cover with broader international benefits |
| International benefits | Emergency cover while travelling may be included | Broader international benefits, including worldwide emergency cover |
| Best suited to | Most visa applicants wanting solid Spain-based cover | Applicants who travel more or want wider cover |
| Price | Request a personalised quote | Request a personalised quote |
If you are an EU citizen or already have public healthcare, a no-copay Más Salud plan, Sanitas Único (for many over-60s) or copay vs no-copay guidance may be a better starting point than the Residents products.
