Get a Quote →Choosing the right Sanitas health insurance on the Costa Blanca — from Alicante and Torrevieja to Jávea, Dénia and Calpe. We help British, Dutch, German, Irish and Nordic expats match a visa-suitable plan to their town and route, subject to current Sanitas terms.
Overview
The Costa Blanca is one of the most established expat regions in the whole of Spain. The Alicante coast has drawn British, Dutch, German, Belgian, Irish and Nordic residents for decades — retirees, second-home owners and, increasingly, remote workers and younger families. That long-standing international community is exactly why private health insurance matters here: most non-EU residents need a suitable policy for their visa, and even EU citizens often want private cover for faster specialist and diagnostic access.
Because the region is so popular, there is strong demand for English-speaking guidance and for plans that work well across the many coastal towns. The right Sanitas plan depends on three things: your residency route (visa or EU certificate), your age and health, and the local medical network where you settle. This page walks through all three for the Costa Blanca, so you can see which plan is likely to fit before you ask for a quote.
Local area
Expats are spread right along the Alicante coast and a little inland, and the practical healthcare question is the same everywhere: which Sanitas doctors, clinics and hospitals are included near you. A quick tour of the main areas:
Alicante city itself has a large international population and good private healthcare access, and is popular with working expats and families as well as retirees. North of the city, Jávea (Xàbia), Dénia, Moraira, Calpe and Altea are favourites with Northern European and British residents, many of them retired or semi-retired.
The southern Costa Blanca — Torrevieja, Orihuela Costa, Guardamar, La Marina, Rojales and Quesada, and Pilar de la Horadada — has some of the densest expat communities in Spain, with very large British, and growing Northern European, populations. It is especially popular with retirees and NLV applicants, so visa-suitable cover is a common need here.
Benidorm and the surrounding coast attract a mix of long-stay residents, seasonal visitors and remote workers. Whatever the town, the key is to confirm the local cuadro médico for your postcode before choosing a plan, because the available network can differ between areas.
Visa routes
If you are moving to the Costa Blanca from outside the EU, your residency route usually decides which Sanitas plan fits. The plan must match the route — we never blur the two.
Many people who settle in the Costa Blanca do so on the Non-Lucrative Visa, especially retirees and those not working in Spain. The NLV generally requires full private health insurance with no copayments and no deductible. Sanitas Residents and Residents Platinum are the plans commonly used for the NLV, subject to terms and certificate requirements. See our NLV quote page or the NLV health insurance guide.
If you are working remotely from the Costa Blanca, the Digital Nomad Visa route applies. Depending on whether private insurance is your main proof or supplementary to Spanish social security, DNV health insurance cover is usually arranged through Residents or Residents Platinum. Start with the DNV quote page.
EU citizens settling in the Costa Blanca register through the green residence certificate (CUE) rather than a visa. Where private cover is needed, a no-copay Más Salud plan is usually the fit — not the visa-specific Residents products. See EU residency certificate cover and health insurance for EU citizens.
Retirees
The Costa Blanca is, above all, a retirement coast. Many residents arrive in their late 50s, 60s and 70s, often on the Non-Lucrative Visa if they are from outside the EU, or via the green certificate if they are EU citizens. For older applicants, age limits matter most at the point of application: once a policy is accepted, contracted and paid, it continues and is not automatically cancelled on reaching a contracting-age ceiling.
For non-EU retirees, Sanitas Residents and Residents Platinum are the usual visa-suitable choices. For many over-60s wanting general private cover, Sanitas Único is designed with older applicants in mind. Acceptance and exact terms always depend on the individual case, so a personalised review is the best starting point. See our retirees guide and over-60s page.
Families
Families relocating to the Costa Blanca often want cover that includes children, paediatric access and maternity where relevant. Más Salud Familias is built for families on the general and EU-residency route, while families applying on a non-EU visa are usually covered through Residents or Residents Platinum — each family member is assessed and named on the certificate. Cover varies by plan, so always check the particular policy details. Our family health insurance guide explains the options.
If different family members are on different routes — for example an EU citizen married to a non-EU partner — the right answer can differ per person. We can review the whole family together so nobody is left with a gap or the wrong product.
Network
Wherever you settle in the Costa Blanca, the most important practical step is to check the local Sanitas cuadro médico — the directory of doctors, specialists, clinics and hospitals included on your policy — for your specific town or postcode. Coverage and the exact network can vary between areas and between plans, and they can change, so this should be confirmed before you buy rather than assumed.
We are English-speaking Sanitas specialists, so we can help you read the cuadro médico for where you live, explain how to find a doctor near you, and point you to the right routing pages. We do not, however, promise access to any specific hospital, specialist, clinic or appointment — that always depends on the current network and your policy terms.
Hospitals
Private hospital and specialist access on the Costa Blanca depends on the Sanitas cuadro médico for your area and your policy terms. The region has a good spread of private medical provision, and Sanitas works through its network of doctors, clinics and hospitals rather than us promising any single named facility.
Because the available network can differ between, say, the northern and southern Costa Blanca, the safest approach is to check the current cuadro médico for your specific town or postcode — we can help you do this in English. Access to particular specialists, diagnostics or hospital treatment is always subject to the network and the policy terms.
Compare plans
For non-EU visa applicants in the Costa Blanca, the main decision is usually between Sanitas Residents and Residents Platinum. Both are comprehensive and commonly used for the NLV and DNV; Platinum adds broader international benefits. The right choice depends on how much you travel and how wide you want your cover — all subject to current Sanitas terms and personal conditions.
| Consideration | Sanitas Residents | Sanitas Residents Platinum |
|---|---|---|
| Typical use | NLV and DNV applications, subject to terms | NLV and DNV applications where broader cover is wanted, subject to terms |
| Cover focus | Comprehensive private cover in Spain | Comprehensive cover with broader international benefits |
| International benefits | Emergency cover while travelling may be included | Broader international benefits, including worldwide emergency cover |
| Best suited to | Most visa applicants wanting solid Spain-based cover | Applicants who travel more or want wider cover |
| Price | Request a personalised quote | Request a personalised quote |
If you are an EU citizen or already have public healthcare, a no-copay Más Salud plan, Sanitas Único (for many over-60s) or copay vs no-copay guidance may be a better starting point than the Residents products.
