Your decision

How Do You Want to Pay for Your Care?

With private cover as an autónomo, your decision comes down to how you prefer to pay. A no-copayment plan keeps everything in one monthly premium, with no additional copayment for covered services. A copayment plan has a lower premium, with small copayments charged for certain services you use. Both give you the full Sanitas network — so you are choosing the payment style that suits your budget and how often you use private care.

How copay works

How Sanitas Copayments Are Charged

On a copayment plan, Sanitas records each applicable service and charges the corresponding copayment through the policy's billing arrangements. The amount depends on the service and the current plan terms.

On a no-copayment plan, covered services do not carry an additional copayment when they are used; the cost is included in the regular premium. Either way, copayments apply per service rather than as a percentage of a large bill, so they stay small and predictable, and we go through the current terms with you before you choose.

Low, Medium or Frequent Use — Which Way Suits You

Low use

If you rarely see a doctor — the occasional GP visit or a one-off test in a year — a copayment plan keeps your fixed monthly cost down, and the few copayments you pay are unlikely to add up to much.

Medium use

If you see specialists a few times a year, or have children who need occasional appointments, a middle option balances a lower premium with smaller copayments, so your costs stay manageable.

Frequent use

If you or your family use healthcare regularly — an ongoing condition, frequent specialist visits, physiotherapy — a no-copayment plan is usually simpler, with no copayments for covered services and a fixed monthly cost.

You do not have to predict it perfectly. Tell us roughly how often you expect to use private care and we will point you to the option that fits, and you can review it as your circumstances change.

Couples & families

How Couples and Families Should Weigh It Up

For a couple or a family, the decision is about the household's overall use, not just yours. Children often need more frequent appointments, which can tip the balance towards a no-copayment plan for predictable costs, while a couple who rarely see a doctor may prefer a lower premium with occasional copayments. When arranging family cover, each person is included as an insured member. We collect the information Sanitas requires for everyone being covered and explain how the policy will be arranged.

FAQs

Copay vs No-Copay for Autónomos FAQs

What self-employed workers ask when choosing how to pay for private healthcare in Spain.

A no-copayment plan puts your whole cost into one monthly premium, with no additional copayment for covered services. A copayment plan has a lower premium, with small copayments charged for certain services through the policy. Both give you the full Sanitas network — the choice is about how you prefer to pay.
A copayment plan usually has the lower monthly premium, so it suits autónomos who use healthcare occasionally. A no-copayment plan costs more each month but has no copayments for covered services, which often works out better for frequent users and families. We help you compare based on how you expect to use it.
Families who see doctors more often tend to prefer a no-copayment plan for predictable costs. Where use is lighter, a copayment plan keeps the monthly premium down. Your partner and children can be insured members on the same plan either way.
Yes. Whether you choose copayment or no-copayment, you have access to the Sanitas network of doctors, specialists and hospitals, and you book directly.
You can review your cover as your needs change — for example if your family grows or you start using healthcare more. We help you move to the option that fits.
Yes. We arrange cover for you and add your partner or children as insured members, and help you choose the copay or no-copay option that suits how you use care.
