What Is Sanitas Residents?

Sanitas Residents is a no-copay Spanish private health insurance plan built for people moving to Spain from outside the EU. It gives you full access to the Sanitas medical network in Spain, emergency cover while you are abroad, Sanitas Dental 21 included, and the insurance certificate that visa and residency applications require.

The important point is that it’s a Spanish policy. It is a policy issued in Spain, structured the way Spanish residency applications expect — comprehensive, with no copayment charged per consultation. That is what separates it from travel insurance, from international expat policies, and from the general plans Sanitas sells to people who already live here.

  • Who it is issued for. Non-EU nationals applying for or holding Spanish residency, plus anyone living mainly in Spain who wants no-copay cover from a Spanish insurer.
  • What it is not. It is not worldwide private medical insurance. Cover outside Spain is emergency cover, not planned treatment. If you need planned treatment abroad, that is Residents Platinum.
  • What it comes with. Sanitas Dental 21, access to the full Sanitas network, and the certificate your application needs — issued once the policy is accepted and paid for.

The Visa Version Is Not Automatically the Same Policy

This causes more confusion than anything else on this product, so it is worth being blunt about it.

Sanitas Residents is configured differently depending on why you are buying it. The version arranged for a visa or residency application is set up to meet what those applications expect — particularly around copayments, waiting periods and the wording that appears on the certificate. A Residents policy taken out by someone already living in Spain, with no application to satisfy, is not automatically identical.

  • Do not assume a quote you found elsewhere is the visa configuration. The plan name being the same does not mean the set-up is the same.
  • Waiting periods are the usual difference. The visa configuration is structured to avoid the gaps that would undermine an application. That is not a universal feature of every Residents policy.
  • The certificate reflects the policy, not the request. A certificate cannot state cover the underlying policy does not provide. If the configuration is wrong, the document will be wrong.
  • Tell us the route before you buy. It is the single piece of information that determines how the policy is set up.

Who Should Choose Residents — and Who Should Not

This is the part most product pages skip. Residents is the right answer for a lot of people and the wrong answer for some, and knowing which you are saves a great deal of time.

Residents is usually right if you...

  • Are applying for the Non-Lucrative Visa
  • Are applying for the Digital Nomad Visa and private cover is your healthcare proof
  • Are on another residency route where private cover is needed
  • Will be living mainly in Spain
  • Want no-copay cover without paying for worldwide planned treatment
  • Want dental included rather than reimbursed

Residents is probably not right if you...

  • Want planned treatment outside Spain, not just emergencies
  • Split your year between Spain and another country
  • Want meaningful pharmacy reimbursement
  • Want dental handled as reimbursement rather than the Dental 21 network
  • Are an EU citizen registering residence — Más Salud is usually the product
  • Are a student on a study visa — Sanitas International Students is built for that

If most of the right-hand column describes you, the page you want is Sanitas Residents Platinum or, for EU and student routes, the plan built for that route.

+

⚠️ Why Repatriation Cover Is Critical for Your Visa

Repatriation is a mandatory requirement for NLV and DNV visa applications. It covers the transport of your remains to your country of origin in the event of death. Consulates check for it explicitly on the policy certificate — policies without a clear repatriation statement are regularly rejected. Sanitas Residents explicitly confirms repatriation on your certificate with no ambiguity.

  • Transport of coffin or ashes to the nearest international airport to the chosen burial location in your country of origin
  • Onward transport costs from airport to burial location — up to US$1,000 (where burial is more than 30km from the airport)

  • No waiting periods. No pre-existing condition exclusions.
  • Repatriation is explicitly confirmed on your Sanitas Residents certificate — exactly what consulates require.

Which Visas Does Sanitas Residents Cover?

As of January 2026, Spanish consulates require private health insurance for the following visa types. The Sanitas Residents Plan is configured for these requirements.

🛂 Non-Lucrative Visa (NLV)

The most common residency visa for retirees and people of independent means relocating to Spain. Requires a no-copay plan with hospitalisation, repatriation and no waiting periods.

  • No copayments — confirmed ✓
  • Hospitalisation included — confirmed ✓
  • Repatriation — stated in certificate ✓
  • No waiting periods — confirmed ✓
  • Certificate in English & Spanish ✓

💻 Digital Nomad Visa (DNV)

Spain's visa for remote workers employed by foreign companies. Same health insurance requirements as the NLV — no copay, hospitalisation, repatriation, no waiting periods.

  • No copayments — confirmed ✓
  • Cover that is active from the policy start date ✓
  • Repatriation — stated in certificate ✓
  • Certificate issued once accepted ✓

🎓 Student Visa

International students studying in Spain. Sanitas Residents is accepted for student visa applications in addition to the dedicated International Students plan.

  • Full Sanitas network ✓
  • No copayments ✓
  • Visa certificate issued once accepted ✓

🏡 Also Accepted For

Family Reunification, Work visa for self-employed and entrepreneurs, Academic and Research mobility, Job-seeker visa (in many cases), EU Residency Certificate (CUE–EX18).

  • Commonly used for visas requiring private health insurance ✓
⚠️
Nationality note: The Sanitas Residents Plan (no waiting periods) is available to non-EU, non-EEA and non-Swiss nationals. EU/EEA/Swiss citizens do not require private health insurance for residency permits — but EU nationals who need the Certificado de Ciudadano de la Unión Europea (CUE–EX18) may also apply for the Sanitas Residents Plan.
Policy Conditions

Waiting Periods

Using this plan for a Spanish visa (NLV, DNV, Student Visa or similar)? There are NO waiting periods. The Sanitas Residents Plan is issued with no waiting periods for all foreign nationals applying for or renewing a Spanish residency or student visa. No waiting periods does not mean every medical situation is automatically covered — medical underwriting, exclusions, pre-existing condition rules, pregnancy-related rules, policy limits and insurer acceptance rules still apply, according to the official policy wording. Full cover begins the day your policy is confirmed — hospitalisation, surgery, diagnostics, specialists, everything. This is explicitly confirmed on your visa certificate.
Transferring from another insurer? If you've been continuously insured with a Spanish health insurer (or any Bupa Group company) for more than 12 months, any standard waiting periods that would otherwise apply can be waived on presentation of your previous policy conditions and last payment receipt (maternity/childbirth may be treated as an exception). The Residents visa option already has no waiting periods, according to the official Sanitas visa-plan wording.
Annual surcharge: A small administrative surcharge of 0.15% is applied once per year, in the first monthly payment of each policy year.

What Happens After You Decide?

The questions that come up once someone has decided the product is right.

  • Joining age. Residents has a maximum contracting age, and it is higher than Platinum's — which is why older applicants are often steered here. Once you hold the policy it does not automatically end when you reach that age. It applies at application — the policy does not end when you reach that age once you hold it.
  • The medical declaration. A health declaration forms part of the application. Outcomes range from acceptance on standard terms, to acceptance with specific exclusions, to a request for more medical information, to a decline. Nobody can tell you the outcome in advance.
  • Certificate timing. The certificate is issued after the policy is accepted and paid for — it cannot be produced before that. Build that into your appointment planning rather than requesting it the day before.
  • Buying before you arrive. The policy can be arranged from your home country before you move, which is normally necessary for a visa application. The start date is set deliberately rather than defaulting to the purchase date.
  • Applying without an NIE. You do not need an NIE to request a quote or begin the process. It becomes relevant later.
  • Paying from a foreign card or account. A Spanish bank account is not usually needed to start. Ongoing payment arrangements are confirmed during the application.
  • Family applications. Everyone is assessed and priced individually, and everyone who must appear on the documentation has to be named. Start dates need to line up across the family or the paperwork shows a gap.

Mistakes People Make With Residents

  • Buying the standard configuration for a visa application. The most expensive mistake on this page. Tell us the route first.
  • Expecting worldwide planned treatment. Residents covers emergencies abroad, not planned care. That is Platinum.
  • Leaving the certificate to the last minute. It follows acceptance and payment. There is no way to shortcut that sequence.
  • Cancelling existing cover too early. Never cancel anything until the new policy is confirmed and active.
  • Assuming dental works like reimbursement. Residents includes Dental 21, which works through the dental network rather than by claiming money back.
  • Leaving a family member off the application. A certificate naming only the main applicant will not support the whole family.

Common Questions

FAQ — Sanitas Residents

Everything expats ask us about this plan.

Yes. The Sanitas Residents Plan has no copayments, no waiting periods, full hospitalisation and surgery, and repatriation to your country of origin — all explicitly confirmed in the policy certificate. It is designed to meet the health insurance requirements set by the Spanish MAEC for the NLV and is accepted for Spanish visa and residency applications. The certificate is issued in English and Spanish. Please note: the visa certificate is issued once payment has been made and the policy has been confirmed by Sanitas. Eligibility depends on your nationality and residency route — we confirm which Sanitas product applies to you before you apply.
Yes. The Sanitas Residents Plan requires only your passport — no NIE or Spanish bank account needed. Payment is accepted by international Visa or Mastercard credit card and by bank transfer (SEPA and international). You can apply from outside Spain before you move, which is essential for visa applications requiring proof of health insurance before arrival.
If you are taking the Sanitas Residents Plan specifically to obtain or renew a Spanish residency or student visa (NLV, DNV, Student Visa etc.), there are no waiting periods. Full cover begins from day one. This is also the version that accepts passport only (no NIE), allows payment by international credit card, and is the one confirmed on your visa certificate. If you are already living in Spain and do not need a visa, the plan is also available with standard waiting periods — useful if you have existing continuity from another insurer. Ask us when you get your quote and we will confirm which applies to your situation.
Your certificate is issued automatically the moment your policy is confirmed. It is sent to the email address you provided and is also available immediately in the Mi Sanitas app under Más → Gestiones → Póliza y documentación → Contrato y documentación. The certificate explicitly confirms: no copayments, hospitalisation cover, repatriation and validity dates — the four points Spanish consulates check. If you need it urgently, contact us or call Sanitas Welcome on 91 200 04 30.
Yes. The Mi Sanitas app is fully available in English (and German, French and Spanish). As a Sanitas Residents customer, you can filter the entire doctor network by the language a specialist speaks — find English-speaking GPs and specialists across Spain, book presential or video appointments, access video consultations 24/7, manage your digital insurance card and medical history, and submit reimbursement requests — all in English.
If you've been continuously insured with a Spanish private health insurer (or any Bupa Group company) for more than 12 months, any standard waiting periods that would otherwise apply can be waived on presentation of your previous policy conditions and last payment receipt (maternity/childbirth may be treated as an exception). The Residents visa option already has no waiting periods, according to the official Sanitas visa-plan wording. If you are taking this plan for a visa, there are no waiting periods regardless of your insurance history.
