Get a Quote →Irish students coming to Spain may want private health insurance for easier access to doctors, specialists, hospitals and medical appointments while studying — on Erasmus, a university exchange, a master's, a language course or another programme. We help Irish students and families compare Sanitas student and private health insurance options in English. Because Ireland is in the EU, this is usually about private healthcare access (and any cover a university or programme requires), rather than a non-EU-style student visa.

Do you need it
Irish citizens are EU nationals, so they are in a different position from non-EU students. Many Irish students — for example on Erasmus or a short exchange — can use a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for necessary state healthcare during a temporary stay in Spain, and do not face the same non-EU student-visa insurance requirement.
However, an EHIC is not the same as private health insurance. It does not give access to private doctors, private hospitals, faster private appointments or English-speaking private support, and it does not replace a private policy where a university, programme or longer-stay process requires one. Many Irish students and parents choose private health insurance for convenience, peace of mind and faster access to private healthcare while living in Spain.
Home cover
An EHIC can help with necessary state healthcare during a temporary stay in Spain, such as an Erasmus semester. It is useful, but it routes you through the Spanish public system, which can mean public health centres, public referral routes and public waiting times, and language can be a barrier.
Private health insurance with Sanitas can give Irish students access to private doctors, specialists, diagnostic tests and hospitals within the Sanitas network, with English-speaking support. For students living in Spain for several months or a full academic year, that can be a more practical day-to-day healthcare solution than relying on an EHIC alone.
Travel insurance is also not a substitute for ongoing healthcare access — it is usually for short trips and emergencies. Where a university or programme requires proof of health cover, check whether an EHIC is accepted or whether a private policy is expected.
International Students
Sanitas International Students is usually the first Sanitas option to check for eligible Irish students coming to Spain. It is designed for international students who need private health insurance for a study stay in Spain, and normally includes no copayments, no waiting periods, medical cover in Spain and repatriation, subject to the current Sanitas International Students policy terms and eligibility rules.
This plan may be suitable where the student is aged between 14 and 35 and the study stay is from 3 to 14 months. It can be useful for Irish students attending university courses, Spanish language schools, exchange programmes, master's studies, business schools, internships linked to study or other eligible academic routes. Before choosing the policy, the student's age, start date, study duration, route, city in Spain and cover needs should all be checked.
Study types
Spain is a popular destination for Irish students on Erasmus, university exchanges, language courses, master's programmes, business-school programmes, art and design courses, hospitality programmes or internship-linked study routes. The right cover depends on the length and type of course, so the policy dates should be aligned with the student's expected stay. Some universities may accept an EHIC for certain purposes, while others may recommend or require additional private cover — check before you travel.
Over 35 / longer
Not every student will fit the Sanitas International Students plan. If the student is over 35, if the study programme is longer than 14 months, or if the situation has unusual requirements, we would check alternative Sanitas options.
Depending on the case, the alternatives may include Más Salud, Sanitas Único or another Sanitas private health insurance option. The correct choice depends on the student's age, route, length of stay, medical history and cover needs. It is important not to choose a plan only because it is cheaper — the insurance must match the situation.
Certificate
Because Irish students are EU citizens, they do not usually go through a Spanish student visa with a consulate certificate in the way non-EU students do. However, some universities, language schools or programmes may ask for proof of health cover, and a longer stay or residence registration may have its own requirements.
Where a certificate or proof of cover is needed, a Sanitas policy can provide documentation showing the insured student, the type of cover and the dates. Check what your specific university, programme or process requires, and we can help make sure the documentation matches.
Parents
Yes, in many cases parents or family members may help arrange the policy for an Irish student, especially where the student is young, still outside Spain or needs help preparing before the move. However, the insured person must be the student, and the details must be accurate.
For younger students, the parent or guardian may need to help provide the student's personal details, passport or ID information, date of birth, course dates, Spanish city and contact details. If the student has any medical history, medication or previous treatment, this should be declared where requested. The quote should be arranged using the student's real details.
No NIE
Many Irish students will not yet have an NIE when arranging insurance before travelling to Spain. This is normal. In many cases, a student policy can be quoted using passport or ID details and personal information, subject to the current Sanitas process and policy requirements. If an NIE is later issued, the policy details may need to be updated where required.
Students should not leave insurance until the last minute, because proof of cover may be needed before arrival or before a submission deadline.
Medical history
Irish students with ongoing medication, previous treatment, surgery, chronic conditions, recent investigations or medical history should declare this where requested. Having a medical condition does not automatically mean the student cannot get insurance. However, Sanitas may need to review the case, request more information, apply specific terms, exclude certain conditions or decline the application depending on the policy and health declaration.
It is important not to hide medical information. If a condition is not declared correctly, this may cause problems later with claims, cover or policy validity. See our pre-existing conditions guide.
Cities
Irish students study across Spain, especially in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, Granada, Salamanca, Málaga and Alicante. Madrid and Barcelona are often popular for universities, business schools, international programmes and study-abroad routes, while Seville, Granada and Salamanca are especially popular for Spanish language learning, culture and semester-abroad programmes.
Before choosing a policy, it is sensible to check local Sanitas medical access in the city where the student will live — general doctors, specialists, diagnostic centres, hospitals, emergency care and the cuadro médico in the local area. See our Sanitas medical network guide.
Which plan
For eligible students aged 14 to 35 coming to Spain for a study stay from 3 to 14 months, Sanitas International Students is usually the first option to check. If the student is outside the age range, studying for longer than the standard period, staying more permanently or wanting broader private healthcare, we may need to compare alternative Sanitas options. The correct plan depends on the student's route, age, dates, medical history and cover needs.

The process
Most people arrive here unsure whether they are ready to buy anything. You do not have to be — the first two steps cost nothing and commit you to nothing.
I needed my health insurance urgently for my Spain student visa, with my appointment just one day away. Stefan guided me through every step, and within about 24 hours my insurance and documents were ready.
