Get a Quote →Younger applicants often get strong value from private health insurance in Spain, with lower premiums by age and fast access to private doctors, specialists and hospitals. This guide covers the main Sanitas options for under-30s — students, graduates, young professionals and young expats — with a personalised quote rather than a fixed price.
Who for
This page is for people under 30 arranging private health insurance in Spain — students, recent graduates, young professionals, remote workers and young expats. Younger applicants often pay lower premiums and may have a simpler underwriting process, depending on their medical history and the policy chosen, so this is often a good time to arrange cover.
Why
Private cover gives faster access to GPs, specialists, diagnostic tests and hospitals, often with English-speaking support — useful when you are new to Spain and the public system. For under-30s the cost is usually lower than for older applicants, so the value can be strong.
Some under-30s arrive on travel insurance or assume they can wait, but travel policies are usually emergency-only and not designed for living in Spain, and for a non-EU visa route private cover is normally required from the start. Arranging cover while you are younger also tends to be cheaper and more straightforward, so it is often worth sorting out early rather than leaving it until you need treatment.
Plans
Common Sanitas options for younger applicants:
| You want | Sanitas option to consider | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| A lower-cost entry point | Sanitas Accede | Entry-level cover, subject to terms |
| Comprehensive no-copay cover | Más Salud Sin Copago | No per-visit charge for covered services |
| A lower monthly premium | A copay Más Salud option | Small per-visit fees on some services |
| Cover as a student | Sanitas International Students (if eligible) | Students 14–35, study stay 3–14 months, proof of studies |
See Más Salud, Sanitas Accede and copay vs no-copay.
Students
If you are coming to Spain to study, the student route is usually separate. For eligible students aged 14 to 35 on a study stay of 3 to 14 months, Sanitas International Students is usually the first option to check, subject to proof of studies; students who do not fit the age, duration or proof-of-studies requirements may need another Sanitas option to be reviewed. See the student health insurance guide.
Young professionals
Young professionals, employees and remote workers may want comprehensive private cover for convenience and English-speaking access. If you are moving on a Digital Nomad Visa or work route, the cover may need to be visa-suitable — see young expat health insurance and the DNV guide.
Visa
If your move to Spain involves a non-EU visa or residency route (for example the Non-Lucrative Visa or Digital Nomad Visa), the cover usually needs to be visa-suitable, so Sanitas Residents, Residents Platinum or another suitable Sanitas option may need to be reviewed. EU citizens registering residency generally use no-copay Más Salud cover instead. These general pages cover everyday private healthcare; we check the right route for your situation.
Pre-existing
Even younger applicants should declare any medical history, medication or previous treatment where requested. Having a condition or taking medication does not automatically mean a refusal. Each case is assessed individually through the health declaration and underwriting, and the outcome can be standard terms, an exclusion, a request for more information, or a decline. Nothing is guaranteed, so a personalised review is essential and you should never cancel existing cover until a new policy is confirmed.
Value
Value is not just the lowest price — it is suitable cover at a sensible cost. An entry plan like Sanitas Accede can be very affordable, while Más Salud offers broader cover. We compare the options so you get the right balance for your needs and budget.
Public vs private
Younger people in Spain may have access to public healthcare in some situations — for example through employment and social security, or via certain student arrangements — but access is not automatic for everyone, and waiting times for specialists and non-urgent care can be longer. Private cover is mainly about speed and convenience: faster GP and specialist appointments, quicker diagnostic tests, and English-speaking support where available.
For many under-30s the two work together — public cover for the basics where you qualify, and private cover as an upgrade for faster access. If you are on a non-EU visa route, private cover is usually required in its own right rather than as an upgrade. We help you work out what applies to your situation.
Situations
Under-30s arrive in Spain in many different ways, and the right cover depends on your situation:
Often arriving for a first job, internship or job search — value options like Sanitas Accede or Más Salud give private access while you settle in.
Usually covered publicly through social security, with private cover as an optional upgrade for faster specialist and diagnostic access.
May need private cover before social security is fully set up — see self-employed health insurance.
Often want flexible, affordable cover with English-speaking support while deciding on longer-term plans.
If you are moving to Spain rather than already here, cover can often be arranged before you arrive — frequently using passport details before you have an NIE or Spanish bank account, with the start date set to match your move. We match a sensible Sanitas option to how you actually use healthcare and your budget.
