What it is

What an Exclusion Is (and How It Differs from a Loading or Waiting Period)

Policy terms, acceptance, waiting periods and documentation requirements can change, so always check the current Sanitas wording and your personal policy conditions (and any local requirements) before relying on cover or applying.

An exclusion is something your policy does not cover — commonly a specific pre-existing condition or related treatment. It is different from two things it is often confused with:

  • Loading — cover is offered, but at an adjusted (higher) premium rather than excluding the condition.
  • Waiting period — a benefit is covered, but only after an initial period; it is a delay, not an exclusion.

See how waiting periods work and how underwriting decides this.

Waiting-period waivers are separate from underwriting. Where you have had more than 12 months of continuous insurance with a Spanish health insurer or a Bupa Group company, Sanitas may reduce or waive waiting periods. The previous policy conditions and your latest payment receipt are required, and maternity and childbirth may be exceptions. A waiting-period waiver affects only the initial waiting time — it is separate from underwriting and does not mean a pre-existing condition is automatically covered.

Common

Common Exclusions

Exact exclusions are individual and depend on your declaration and Sanitas’ assessment, but common areas include:

  • Specific pre-existing conditions and directly related treatment
  • Some pre-existing chronic conditions or their complications
  • Certain treatments subject to the policy’s general terms and limits
  • Items outside the plan’s scope (always check the policy wording)
This is general information, not your policy. Your actual exclusions are set out in your personal policy conditions — always check them.

Visa cover

How Exclusions Affect Visa Cover

A policy can have an exclusion and still be suitable for a Non-Lucrative or Digital Nomad visa, provided the core cover still meets the route’s requirements (comprehensive cover in Spain, no co-payments where expected, etc.). However, an exclusion or gap where full qualifying cover is expected could be a problem, so it should be checked. We help confirm whether your cover still meets the route’s requirements — we do not handle the visa application itself.

Review

Can an Exclusion Be Removed or Reviewed?

Sometimes. Depending on the condition and Sanitas’ rules, an exclusion may be reviewed over time — for example after a sustained symptom-free or treatment-free period — but this is never automatic and cannot be promised. It is worth asking us to check the position for your specific case.

Pre-existing

Pre-Existing Condition Exclusions

Pre-existing conditions are the most common reason for an exclusion or loading. A condition does not automatically mean no cover, and it does not automatically mean it is covered either — it is assessed individually. Disclose it honestly so it is handled correctly. See pre-existing conditions cover and the health declaration.

What we need

What We Need to Explain Your Terms

  • The condition(s) you are concerned about, with dates and status
  • Any current treatment or medication
  • Whether you need cover for a visa or for general use
  • Your age and where you live in Spain

With this we explain what an exclusion or loading might mean for you and find the most suitable option. Get a quote.

Mistakes

Common Mistakes About Exclusions

  • Assuming a pre-existing condition is automatically covered
  • Confusing an exclusion (something not covered under the policy) with a waiting period (a delay)
  • Not checking whether an exclusion affects visa suitability
  • Not declaring a condition to avoid an exclusion — which risks the whole policy
  • Assuming exclusions can always be removed later

Important information

Important Information

Important: Sanitas policy benefits, exclusions, waiting periods, authorisation rules, medical network access and visa suitability can change. Cover also depends on the specific policy chosen, the applicant’s personal terms and conditions, health declaration, acceptance terms and any individual exclusions applied by Sanitas. Always check the actual current Sanitas policy wording, certificate wording, general terms and personal policy conditions before relying on any cover or making a visa, medical or financial decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about this Sanitas add-on.

Something your policy does not cover — often a specific pre-existing condition or related treatment. It is set out in your personal policy conditions.
An exclusion removes cover for something; a loading keeps the cover but at an adjusted (higher) premium.
No — a waiting period is a delay before a benefit starts; an exclusion is a specific condition, treatment or benefit that is not covered under the policy, according to the policy terms.
Possibly — a policy can have an exclusion and still be visa-suitable if the core cover meets the route’s requirements. It should be checked; we help confirm this.
Sometimes, depending on the condition and Sanitas’ rules — for example after a symptom-free period — but it is never automatic and cannot be promised.
Usually because of a pre-existing or ongoing condition identified in your health declaration. It depends on Sanitas’ underwriting.
No — each condition is assessed individually. Depending on underwriting, Sanitas may accept it as standard, apply a loading, exclude it, request further information, postpone the decision, or decline cover. Always declare it so it is handled correctly.
No — non-disclosure can lead to refused claims or a cancelled policy. An exclusion is far better than risking the whole policy.
Your certificate confirms the policy; exclusions are in your personal policy conditions. For visas, what matters is whether the cover meets the route’s requirements.
It depends on the plan and your declaration. Sanitas Único, for example, typically does not use a general questionnaire. We explain the position per plan.
