The distinction
The two benefits answer different questions. Emergency healthcare abroad is for something urgent and unexpected that happens on a trip outside Spain. Worldwide reimbursement is for eligible care you choose or arrange outside the Sanitas network — where you pay and claim back a share. When you know which is which, you know what to do first: rely on your emergency benefit if something happens on a trip, or check eligibility and authorisation in advance if you are deliberately arranging out-of-network care.
Cover on trips
Sanitas Residents and Sanitas Residents Platinum include emergency healthcare abroad for urgent or emergency care while you are travelling outside Spain. The annual maximum depends on the plan:
What you do first: if you have an emergency abroad, you seek urgent treatment and it is handled as an emergency under your policy — you are not planning the care in advance.
Out-of-network flexibility
Residents Platinum also includes worldwide reimbursement for eligible care outside the Sanitas network — including care you plan. It reimburses 90% of eligible costs, up to €500,000 per insured person per year, subject to the policy terms and sub-limits, and you generally pay the provider then submit the claim.
What you do first: for deliberately arranged out-of-network care, it is worth checking that the treatment is eligible and whether prior authorisation applies before you go ahead — then keep the invoice, medical documentation and proof of payment to claim.

Which plan
The right plan usually follows from how far your life reaches outside Spain:
The third benefit
One more benefit to be aware of: the United States has its own dedicated USA Cover benefit on Residents Platinum, distinct from both emergency healthcare abroad and worldwide reimbursement. It has its own scope and authorisation.
The full detail lives on Sanitas medical cover in the USA — this page focuses on the emergency-versus-worldwide distinction.
