Why it matters
For the Spanish DNV, British remote workers usually need comprehensive private health insurance valid in Spain. A foreign employee normally needs full private cover; a self-employed autónomo may combine Spanish social security with private cover. The NHS, a GHIC and travel insurance do not qualify. We arrange suitable Sanitas cover.
If you are a British citizen applying for the Spanish Digital Nomad Visa (DNV), you generally need comprehensive private health insurance from an insurer authorised in Spain as part of your application. British citizens are non-EU for Spanish residence purposes, so you cannot rely on the NHS or a GHIC/EHIC once you live in Spain as a resident — you need cover that meets the visa requirements and produces the right certificate. That is the part we help with; we do not handle the visa application or give immigration advice.
Consulate
For the DNV, consulates typically expect comprehensive cover valid in Spain, usually no co-payments, no waiting periods that leave gaps, an insurer authorised in Spain, and a certificate showing the insured person, cover and validity dates. British applicants should confirm which Spanish consulate has jurisdiction for their address before applying (or from inside Spain).
Not enough
The NHS only covers you in the UK, and a GHIC or EHIC is for temporary stays and emergencies — not residence. Travel insurance is for trips, not living in Spain, and will not meet the visa requirement or produce a residence certificate. British applicants need a comprehensive Spanish residence policy with the right certificate.
Best options
For the DNV the cover depends on your structure. A British employee working remotely for a company outside Spain usually needs full visa-compliant private cover — commonly Sanitas Residents Platinum or Sanitas Residents. A self-employed applicant who registers as autónomo and pays Spanish social security may use private cover as a supplement.
Compare on the best Sanitas plans for the DNV, read copay vs no-copay, and see the full Digital Nomad Visa route guide.
Routes
The DNV splits into a foreign employee route (full private cover) and a self-employed / autónomo route (private cover alongside Spanish social security). Which applies changes your healthcare proof — we match the cover to your route. See the DNV route guide.
Certificate
The certificate must name the insured person and show comprehensive cover valid in Spain, no co-payments where expected, an insurer authorised in Spain, and validity dates. A quote or receipt is not a certificate — it is issued once the policy is in force. A policy can usually be arranged in advance with a future start month timed to your move. See the certificate page.
No NIE yet
You do not need an NIE or a Spanish bank account to arrange the cover — many British applicants take out the policy before the consulate appointment so the certificate is ready. We can set this up for you in English and time the start date to your application.
Family
If your spouse/partner and children are applying with you, each person normally needs to be named on the cover. We can quote a family policy that lists everyone with the right certificate. Where family join later, see family reunification.
Pre-existing
Private cover involves a health declaration, and a pre-existing condition does not automatically mean no cover — but it may affect terms, so it is best disclosed and assessed early. We are honest about what is realistic and find the most suitable Sanitas option.
