Overview
Book a scheduled consultation with an English-speaking Sanitas specialist to discuss your situation, compare suitable policy routes and understand what information is needed before applying. This is the right page if you want a planned conversation about which Sanitas policy fits your move, residency, renewal or switch — for example NLV, DNV, student, EU/CUE, over-60s, families or pre-existing conditions. We help with the Sanitas health-insurance part only — not visa/legal advice or medical advice.
Choosing the right Spanish health insurance is easier with a proper conversation than with a rushed form. A consultation lets us understand your route, your situation and your timeline, then point you to the correct Sanitas cover and explain exactly what you need to do next. It is especially useful when more than one plan could apply, when there is a medical history to declare, or when timing and certificates matter for a visa or residency appointment.
Spanish Health Insurance is a team of English-speaking Sanitas specialists. We help you understand and arrange the right Sanitas private health insurance for your situation — we do not handle visa applications or give immigration legal advice, and we are not a medical service. NLV
Sanitas Residents is suitable for Non-Lucrative Visa health-insurance requirements — a no-copay comprehensive policy with no waiting periods for the visa option, repatriation included where applicable, and a certificate once the policy is accepted, active/processed and paid. Sanitas Residents Platinum is the wider premium option with enhanced international elements. For the NLV, the choice is Sanitas Residents or Residents Platinum.
A consultation helps you decide between Residents and Residents Platinum, choose the right start month, plan the certificate timing around your appointment, and get the application details right. Final visa decisions are made by the Spanish authorities and depend on your full file. See NLV health insurance, the best Sanitas plan for the NLV, the NLV certificate and Residents vs Residents Platinum.
DNV
For Digital Nomad Visa applicants using private insurance as their healthcare proof, Sanitas Residents and Sanitas Residents Platinum are the Sanitas visa/residency options — both no-copay, both with no waiting periods for the visa option. Platinum is often the wider choice for nomads who travel or spend time abroad.
A key thing a consultation clarifies is whether you are using private insurance as your healthcare proof, or are covered through Spanish social security / public healthcare. If private insurance is your proof, Residents or Residents Platinum applies; if you are registered in Spanish social security, private Sanitas cover may be supplementary instead. The UGE or relevant authority decides the full application. See DNV health insurance, the best Sanitas plan for the DNV, DNV employee cover and DNV autónomo cover.
Student
For most student visa applicants, the usual Sanitas student product is Sanitas International Students. Sanitas Residents may be reviewed where the student does not fit the International Students criteria — for example because of age or length of stay. A consultation helps confirm which product fits your course, age and stay.
We can also explain what the student route needs in terms of certificate wording and timing, and what to prepare. See student visa health insurance and International Students vs Sanitas Residents.
EU
EU, EEA and Swiss citizens do not normally use the third-country visa products. Where private health insurance is needed for EU residency (the green certificate / CUE), the usual Sanitas direction is a no-copay Más Salud option — not Sanitas Residents or Residents Platinum, which are the third-country visa plans.
A consultation helps confirm whether you need private cover at all for your registration, and points you to a suitable no-copay option where you do. Always confirm the exact requirement with the relevant authority, as EU registration differs from the visa routes. See EU residency health insurance, EU residency requirements and Sanitas for EU citizens.
Over-60
Age affects which plans are available, so a consultation is especially useful for older applicants. For third-country visa/residency applicants over 60, the normal routing is Sanitas Residents first, with Residents Platinum only if age eligible.
We help you understand which plan is realistic for your age and route before you apply. See over-60 cover, over-65 cover and Sanitas Único.
Families
Families and couples often have different ages, different routes or different health declarations within the same application. One person might be on a visa route while another is an EU citizen; ages can affect which plan each person can take; and medical history is assessed individually.
A consultation helps map the right Sanitas route for each person, so the whole family is covered correctly rather than forced onto one plan that does not suit everyone. See family health insurance and family reunification cover.
Medical
If you have a medical history, a consultation is the safest way to understand the process before you apply. We can guide you on what may need to be declared and how the Sanitas medical questionnaire works — but a final decision on acceptance, exclusions, cover or any additional premium can only be made after the formal Sanitas application, medical questionnaire and underwriting review.
Sanitas may accept a condition at no extra cost, accept it with an additional premium, exclude it, request more information, or decline the application. We cannot promise acceptance or cover for a condition before underwriting. Declaring honestly protects your cover. See pre-existing conditions, the medical questionnaire, medical review and the pre-existing conditions enquiry.
Start
Timing matters for visa and residency appointments, and a consultation helps you plan it. Sanitas policies start on the 1st day of the selected month, and can be contracted up to a maximum of 6 months in advance — so you can arrange cover early and align the start month with your timeline. The certificate is issued once the policy is accepted, active/processed and paid, and many files also want a payment receipt or confirmation.
Do not leave insurance until the night before an appointment. We help you arrange it in good time with the right start month. See Sanitas policy start dates, the visa certificate explained, same-day certificate and before your consulate appointment.
Switching
Switching insurer for residency may be possible, but the timing has to be right. The key rule: do not cancel your existing cover until the replacement policy is accepted and the start date is confirmed, so there is no gap. A gap can cause problems at a residence renewal.
The new policy must still be suitable for your route, the certificate wording must stay correct, and any pre-existing conditions and the medical questionnaire may apply — so check before cancelling anything. A consultation helps you plan the switch cleanly. See changing health insurer in Spain, changing visa health insurer, avoiding a gap in cover and changing cover at a residency renewal.
Covers
A consultation is a practical conversation about your insurance. Depending on your situation, it can cover:
After the consultation, you will know which Sanitas direction fits and what to do next. When you are ready for prices, you can get a personalised quote.
Which plan
As a quick guide, the consultation usually points to one of these directions:
| Situation | Sanitas direction |
|---|---|
| NLV applicant | Sanitas Residents or Residents Platinum |
| DNV using private insurance as proof | Sanitas Residents or Residents Platinum |
| Family reunification / non-EU residency | Sanitas Residents or Residents Platinum |
| Student visa | Usually Sanitas International Students; Residents reviewed if outside student criteria |
| EU / CUE applicant needing private cover | No-copay Más Salud |
| Over-60 non-EU visa applicant | Sanitas Residents first; Residents Platinum only if age eligible (max 64) |
| Already in public healthcare | Sanitas may be supplementary, not the residency proof |
This is a starting point, not the final answer — the consultation confirms the right plan for your exact situation. Compare the two visa plans on Residents vs Residents Platinum, and see visa-compliant cover and private health insurance for residency for the route detail.
Prepare
You do not need anything formal to book, but the conversation is quicker and more useful if you have a rough idea of:
If you do not have all of this yet, that is fine — part of the point of the consultation is to work it out together.
Not provide
In other words: we are insurance specialists, not an immigration adviser, a law firm or a medical service. We help you choose and arrange the right Sanitas cover and prepare the certificate; we cannot make a visa decision, give legal or medical advice, or provide emergency healthcare. For a medical emergency in Spain, call 112.
