The period this covers

Cover for the Gap Before Your Public Entitlement Begins

Moving to Spain often means a short window where your public healthcare route is not active yet. A future job or autónomo registration does not provide healthcare before the relevant public entitlement is active. If you need private cover during that period, we can request an agreed start date suited to your move. Cover starts once Sanitas has accepted and confirmed the policy; waiting periods and the policy terms still apply.

This page is for people whose employment, RETA or other public-healthcare entitlement is not yet active, and who need or choose private cover during that period.

This page is about that specific window. It is healthcare, not paperwork: the aim is simply to make sure you and your family can see a doctor and get treatment while your employment, self-employment or public-healthcare entitlement is still being set up.

When a gap can happen

When You Might Have a Healthcare Gap

A gap is not something everyone has — but it is common in these situations:

  • You have arrived in Spain before a job starts, so your employer has not yet registered you for social security.
  • You are setting up as autónomo and your RETA registration is still in progress.
  • You have moved but not yet enrolled in public healthcare, or are waiting for paperwork to complete.
  • Your partner or children have joined you before their own route to public cover is active.

In each case the point is the same: there can be a period where you are living in Spain but your public entitlement is not active. If that applies to you and you want cover in the meantime, a private Sanitas plan can provide cover for that period, subject to acceptance and the policy terms.

How it fits

How Your Public Entitlement Fits

Once your working and Social Security position is settled — through employment, autónomo (RETA) contributions or another route — you may be able to rely on the public healthcare that comes with it. At that point, private cover is a choice rather than an obligation: some people keep a Sanitas plan for faster access, wider choice of specialists and English-speaking support, and others rely on the public route. Either way, this page is only about covering the period before that entitlement is active.

If you want to understand the ongoing picture, our EU residency health insurance page and the guide for economically inactive EU citizens cover what happens once you are settled.

Interim options

Sanitas Options for the Interim

For cover during the interim, Sanitas Más Salud — the popular no-copayment range — is a common choice, because it is comprehensive private healthcare that begins once Sanitas has accepted and confirmed the policy, on an agreed start date suited to your move (waiting periods and the policy terms still apply). Más Salud Sin Copago suits an individual, and Más Salud Familias covers a partner and children together.

If you want a wider package, Sanitas Residents is another comprehensive network option and Residents Platinum adds wider reimbursement and international benefits; note the general Residents and Residents Platinum plans have waiting periods under their terms, which we will explain for your situation. For a short interim, a Más Salud plan is often the simplest fit.

One distinction to keep clear: for qualifying non-EU visa or residence applications there are Visado versions — Sanitas Residents Visado and Sanitas Residents Platinum Visado — which provide cover with no copayments and no waiting periods for those applications. As an EU citizen you register through the green-certificate route rather than a visa, so these Visado versions are not aimed at you; the general plans above are the ones to look at.

The timing

Requesting a Start Date to Suit Your Move

This is where a private plan is genuinely useful for a move: we can request an agreed start date suited to your move. Cover starts once Sanitas has accepted and confirmed the policy; waiting periods and the policy terms still apply.

  • Tell us your move dates. When you arrive, and when you expect your job, autónomo route or public healthcare to become active.
  • We request a start date. We ask Sanitas for a start date suited to your move; cover begins once the policy is accepted and confirmed.
  • Cover for the interim. Once the policy is confirmed, you have Sanitas cover while your public position is being settled, subject to the policy terms and any waiting periods.
  • Review when your entitlement begins. You can review whether to keep the private policy at renewal or in line with its cancellation terms.

FAQs

Cover Before Social Security — FAQs

Common questions about arranging private cover for the period before your public entitlement in Spain is active.

No. If your employment, autónomo (RETA) or public-healthcare entitlement is active, you may be able to rely on that route. This cover is for people who have a genuine gap — for example before a job starts, or while autónomo registration is in progress — and who need or choose private cover during that period.
Not automatically. It depends on your registration position and the healthcare evidence available to you; our EU residency requirements guide explains the main routes. Where you do need private cover, or you simply want healthcare in place during the interim, we can help — but we do not present private insurance as automatically required for every EU registration.
