Why Estudiantes — Not a Travel Policy

Built for Study Abroad, Not Just Tourism

Generic travel insurance treats a 12-month Erasmus as a long holiday. Sanitas Estudiantes is a real health insurance product — built around the medical situations that actually come up when a young person is living overseas for an academic year.

Two Variants 🌍

Europa or Mundo — Geography Match

Europa covers Erasmus and study within Europe. Mundo covers the rest of the world — USA, Canada, Australia, Asia, Latin America, Africa and the Middle East. Choose the right variant for the destination country and the price reflects the geography of cover.

Real Medical Backbone 🩺

Sanitas Medical Team Coordinates Care

If the student gets ill abroad, Sanitas's medical team coordinates with the local doctor — in Spanish — to decide treatment and, if necessary, arrange repatriation. This is the difference between travel insurance (pays bills) and real health cover (helps you make decisions in a medical situation in a foreign country).

Family Discount 💸

Existing Customers Pay Less Automatically

If anyone in your household already holds a Sanitas health policy, the reduced rate (€42.70 Europa / €74.80 Mundo) applies automatically when we issue the quote. No coupon code, no application — we check the household and apply the discount as standard. €98 per year saved on Europa, €85 per year on Mundo.

Full Coverage Detail

What's Included in Sanitas Estudiantes

Eight protection categories that activate the moment the student leaves Spain. The plan is built to handle the situations that actually go wrong while studying overseas — sudden illness, accidents, hospital admission and the practical chaos of dealing with a foreign healthcare system in a crisis.

No waiting periods. No copayments. Day-one cover. Sanitas Estudiantes has no carencias on any cover element — hospitalisation, surgery, pharmacy, repatriation, video consultations all active from the moment the policy is in force. This is the same no-waiting structure that applies to Sanitas's visa-grade plans such as Residents and Residents Platinum.
⚕️ Medical, Surgical, Pharmaceutical & Hospitalisation Expenses Abroad
  • Doctor consultations and specialist visits in the country of study
  • Diagnostic tests — blood work, imaging, scans, biopsies — when clinically necessary
  • Surgical procedures, including the anaesthetic and operating-theatre fees
  • Inpatient and day-patient hospitalisation following sudden illness or accident
  • Prescribed pharmacy — medication required as part of the treatment abroad
  • Direct billing arrangements at most major private hospitals in the network country
  • Exact monetary limits per cover category are set out in the Condiciones Particulares — sent with the quote so you can see the figures before you commit.
☎️ Consulta Médica Telefónica — Spanish-Language Medical Backup
+

A dedicated phone line giving the student — and the family back in Spain — Spanish-speaking medical advice while the local doctor handles the in-country care. The point isn't to replace local treatment, it's to give the family the medical context they need to understand what's happening, in their own language.

  • 24/7 access from anywhere in the world
  • Spanish-speaking Sanitas doctors on the line
  • Translation and clarification of foreign medical reports
  • Second-opinion support on treatment recommendations
  • Coordination with local doctor where helpful
🚑 Urgent Sanitary Repatriation — to Spain
+

If the medical situation needs treatment back in Spain — or the student needs to be flown home with medical supervision — Sanitas arranges and covers the repatriation. Medical staff coordinate with the local doctor, decide whether repatriation is the right call, and handle the operational logistics. The student and family don't have to navigate flight bookings or medical-escort paperwork during a crisis.

  • Air ambulance arrangement where medically required
  • Commercial flight with medical escort for less acute cases
  • Sanitas medical team coordinates with the treating physician abroad
  • Transport from arrival airport to Spanish hospital arranged
  • Same Sanitas medical team continues care after arrival in Spain
  • Repatriation is included in both Europa and Mundo variants. Decision to repatriate is medical, made jointly by the local doctor abroad and the Sanitas medical team.
🛏️ Convalescence Expenses
+
  • Accommodation costs during recovery after illness or surgery abroad
  • Extended care and recuperation period where return to study isn't yet possible
  • Local transport for follow-up appointments during convalescence
  • Coordination of return to study programme post-recovery where feasible
👪 Family Member Transport & Hotel — Hospitalisation Cover
+

If the student is hospitalised abroad and a family member needs to travel out to be with them, Sanitas covers the cost of getting there and staying nearby during the hospital admission. For most families this is the single most important feature — the safety net of knowing a parent can physically be there if needed without it becoming a financial decision.

  • Return flights for one family member from Spain to the country of hospitalisation
  • Hotel accommodation near the hospital during the admission
  • Local transport in the country of admission
  • Triggered automatically by the hospital admission — no separate authorisation needed
  • Per-day and total limits apply per the policy schedule — these are set out in the Condiciones Particulares we send with the quote.
💊 Medication Shipping Abroad
+
  • Sourcing of essential medication not available locally in the country of study
  • Shipping to the student's address abroad — costs covered by the policy
  • Cooperation with local pharmacies where direct supply is the better option
  • Useful for chronic-condition medication, prescribed during the trip or already in use
📹 Video Consultation Programmes
+

Structured video-consultation programmes inside the Mi Sanitas app give the student face-to-face access to Spanish-speaking medical professionals from anywhere with an internet connection. This is in addition to the Consulta Médica Telefónica phone line — useful for non-emergency situations where a video appointment is genuinely better than a call.

  • Video consultations via the Mi Sanitas app (English, German, French and Spanish interface)
  • Same Sanitas network used by Spanish residents — same medical standard
  • Useful for follow-ups after a local consultation abroad
  • Mental-health support via video where the local language is a barrier
  • Mi Sanitas app is available on iOS and Android. Access details sent on policy activation.
What's Not Covered — Be Clear Upfront
+

Honesty matters here. Sanitas Estudiantes is real health cover for medical situations abroad — it's not unlimited, and it does not cover everything. The exclusions below are standard for outbound study insurance:

  • In-Spain primary care while the student is in Spain (this is what Sanitas Más Salud or similar covers)
  • Routine annual check-ups in the country of study (this is cover for unforeseen illness and accident)
  • Maternity-related care during the trip (childbirth is excluded)
  • Treatment for pre-existing conditions where pre-existence is not disclosed
  • Adventure sports, professional sports and high-risk activity injuries (specific list per policy)
  • Costs incurred before the policy start date or after the policy end date
  • Full exclusions list is in the Condiciones Generales — we send these with the quote so you can read the legal text before deciding.
Geography of Cover

Europa or Mundo — Pick the Right Geography

The two variants differ on geographic scope and price. Pick the one that matches where the student is going — Europa for European study, Mundo for everywhere else. If the trip moves between Europe and the rest of the world, Mundo is the safer choice.

Worldwide

Sanitas Estudiantes Mundo

Cover anywhere in the world — including the USA, Canada, Australia, the entire Asia-Pacific region, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa. The right variant for non-European university study and complex itineraries.

Quote Estudiantes Mundo →
ℹ️
Not sure which variant? Tell us the destination country when you request a quote and we'll confirm — Europa is the right call for EU/EEA/UK/Switzerland; Mundo is required for the USA, Canada, Australia, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa. For trips that move between regions during the study period (e.g. a UK degree with a US semester), Mundo is the safer choice.
Policy Conditions

Waiting Periods, Eligibility & Discounts

No waiting periods on Sanitas Estudiantes. Full cover begins the moment the policy is in force on the start date you choose. This applies to all cover elements — hospitalisation, surgery, pharmacy, repatriation, video consultations, family transport. Same no-waiting structure used on Sanitas's visa-grade plans for foreign nationals in Spain.
Age eligibility — 10 to 35. Minimum entry age is 10. Maximum entry age and maximum age to remain on the plan is 35. Once a member reaches 36 they need to move to a different Sanitas product — typically Sanitas Más Salud if continuing as a Spanish resident, or Sanitas Residents if relocating abroad on a visa.
Existing-customer discount — applied automatically. If anyone in your household already has a Sanitas health policy, the existing-customer price (€42.70 Europa / €74.80 Mundo) applies automatically when we issue the quote — €8.20/month saving on Europa, €7.10/month on Mundo. We check the household at quote time so you don't have to ask.
Duration aligned to the trip. Policies are issued to match the study period abroad — a semester, an academic year, a full degree. The cover start date is the day the student leaves Spain (or any date you nominate). The end date is the day they return.
Annual administrative surcharge. A small administrative surcharge of 0.15% is applied once per year, included in the first monthly payment of each policy year — same as on other Sanitas products.

Common Questions

FAQ — Sanitas Estudiantes

Everything families ask us when a son or daughter is heading abroad to study.

Sanitas Estudiantes is designed for young people aged 10 to 35 who are resident in Spain and travelling abroad to study. School exchanges, Erasmus, full undergraduate or postgraduate degrees overseas, gap years tied to a study programme, summer language schools — all qualify. The maximum age to remain on the plan is 35; the minimum age to enrol is 10. The plan is not designed for foreign students coming to study in Spain — that is Sanitas International Students.
No. Sanitas Estudiantes is an outbound product covering Spanish residents while they are abroad. It does not provide the in-Spain primary care that a Spanish student visa, Non-Lucrative Visa or Digital Nomad Visa requires. Foreign students coming to study in Spain need Sanitas International Students or, in some cases, Sanitas Residents. Foreign nationals applying for an NLV or DNV need Sanitas Residents or Sanitas Residents Platinum — those are the only Sanitas plans with the no-copay / no-waiting-period / repatriation-confirmed certificate that consulates require.
Estudiantes Europa covers travel and study within Europe — full EU/EEA, UK, Switzerland and most of the wider European geography. Estudiantes Mundo covers anywhere in the world — the USA, Canada, Australia, the whole of Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa. The choice depends on the destination country. For trips that move between regions during the study period (e.g. a UK degree with a US semester), Mundo is the safer choice. We confirm which variant applies before we issue the quote so there's no confusion at enrolment.
There are two prices per variant — one for existing Sanitas customers, one for non-customers.

Europa: €42.70/month for existing Sanitas customers, €50.90/month for non-customers (saving of €8.20/month, around €98 per year).

Mundo: €74.80/month for existing Sanitas customers, €81.90/month for non-customers (saving of €7.10/month, around €85 per year).

The existing-customer discount applies automatically when we issue the quote — if anyone in the household already has a Sanitas health policy, the lower price is the one we quote. You don't have to ask for it.
No to both. Sanitas Estudiantes has no carencias (waiting periods) and no copayments on services covered by the plan. Cover starts on the policy start date you choose, and there are no out-of-pocket payments at point of service. This is the same no-waiting-period structure that applies to Sanitas's visa-grade plans such as Residents and Residents Platinum — it's not a budget feature, it's how this product family is structured.
Eight categories of cover, all active from day one:

(1) Medical, surgical, pharmaceutical and hospitalisation expenses abroad following sudden illness or accident; (2) Consulta Médica Telefónica — a 24/7 Spanish-language medical phone line that supports the local doctor and gives the family Spanish-language context; (3) urgent sanitary repatriation of injured or sick policyholders back to Spain; (4) convalescence expenses during recovery; (5) transport and hotel costs for a family member if the student is hospitalised; (6) shipping of essential medication not available locally; (7) structured video-consultation programmes via the Mi Sanitas app; (8) emergency video consultations 24/7. Exact monetary limits per category are set out in the Condiciones Particulares — we send these with the quote before you commit.
If the medical situation abroad needs treatment back in Spain — or if the student needs to be flown home with medical supervision — Sanitas arranges and covers the repatriation. The Sanitas medical team coordinates with the local doctor abroad, decides whether repatriation is the appropriate clinical call, organises the medical transport (air ambulance if needed, escorted commercial flight if appropriate), and handles the operational logistics. The student and family don't have to navigate flight bookings or medical-escort paperwork in the middle of a health crisis. Once back in Spain, the same Sanitas medical team continues care — there's no handover gap.
Yes. If the student is hospitalised abroad, Sanitas Estudiantes covers the cost of transport and hotel accommodation for a family member to travel out and stay nearby during the hospital admission. For most families this is the single most important feature — the safety net of knowing a parent can physically be there if needed, without it becoming a financial decision in the middle of an emergency. The cover is triggered automatically by the hospital admission, no separate authorisation. Per-day and total limits are in the policy schedule.
35. Minimum entry age is 10, maximum entry age and maximum age to remain on the plan is 35. Once a member reaches 36 they need to move to a different Sanitas product appropriate to their circumstances — typically Sanitas Más Salud if continuing as a Spanish resident, Sanitas Profesionales if self-employed (autónomo), or Sanitas Residents if relocating abroad on a visa. We can manage the transition without a fresh medical questionnaire if the move happens before the 36th birthday.
Yes. The plan includes structured video-consultation programmes via the Mi Sanitas app — 36 medical specialities, 3,600+ professionals available by video, same network used by Sanitas's 2.9 million Spanish policyholders. The student can speak face-to-face with Spanish-speaking medical professionals from anywhere with an internet connection. This is in addition to the Consulta Médica Telefónica phone line. Mi Sanitas is available in English, German, French and Spanish on iOS and Android — the student can filter specialists by the language they speak.
The plan is structured for the duration of the study period abroad. Most families take it out for the length of the Erasmus programme, the academic year, or the full duration of a degree. The start date can be backdated to the day the student leaves Spain (or any nominated date), and the end date is the day they return. If the trip is extended beyond the original cover period, the policy can be extended without breaking continuity — let us know at least 30 days before the original end date so we can issue the extension cleanly.
No — it complements EHIC. The European Health Insurance Card gives Spanish students emergency public-system access in another EU country at local-resident conditions. EHIC does not include repatriation, private hospital cover, family-member transport, medication shipping, or video consultations with Spanish-speaking doctors. Estudiantes Europa fills every one of those gaps. Most Spanish Erasmus students carry both — EHIC for emergency public-system access, Estudiantes for everything else. See the dedicated Erasmus health insurance page for the full comparison.
Three options:

(1) Annual payment by international credit card — Visa or Mastercard. The cleanest option for families abroad with no Spanish bank account, or anyone who prefers one payment up front and nothing to manage during the trip.

(2) Annual payment by bank transfer — SEPA or international wire. Same convenience as the card option, useful when card limits are an issue.

(3) Monthly direct debit — from a Spanish or EU IBAN. The default option for existing Sanitas customers; billing can be consolidated with your existing Sanitas health policy.

We confirm the payment setup with you before the policy is issued — exact dates of the first and subsequent payments, so there are no surprises.
Pre-existing conditions need to be declared on the health questionnaire at policy inception — same standard as any Sanitas product. Once declared, Sanitas confirms cover terms before the policy is issued; in most non-acute conditions cover applies as standard. For more complex situations — diabetes, asthma, mental-health conditions, autoimmune conditions — we'll often suggest a brief conversation with Sanitas medical underwriting before the policy is finalised so the cover is fit for purpose. Declared conditions are covered to the extent agreed; undeclared conditions risk claim rejection at point of need.
Mi Sanitas is available worldwide on iOS and Android. Log in with the Sanitas credentials sent at policy activation. Set the app language to English, German, French or Spanish — the student's choice. The app gives access to: video consultations with the Sanitas network, the Consulta Médica Telefónica direct dial, digital insurance card, medical history, claim submission, and emergency contact numbers. The policy documents (Condiciones Particulares and Condiciones Generales) are available in-app under Más → Gestiones → Póliza y documentación → Contrato y documentación.
