Eligibility

Which Children Qualify

We do not handle visa applications or give immigration legal advice. We are English-speaking Sanitas health insurance specialists who help you arrange the private health insurance many Spanish visa and residency routes require — suitable policy options, certificate wording, start dates and personalised quotes. Visa rules vary by consulate and change over time, so always confirm the full immigration requirements with the relevant Spanish consulate, an Extranjería office or a qualified immigration specialist.

Children of the EU/EEA/Swiss citizen, or of their spouse, can generally obtain the tarjeta comunitaria. This usually covers children under 21, and older children where they remain dependent. Adopted children and children of one spouse can qualify subject to conditions — confirm yours.

Proof

Proving the Relationship & Custody

  • Each child’s birth certificate (apostilled and sworn-translated)
  • Custody or parental-responsibility evidence where relevant
  • The other parent’s consent where required
  • Dependency evidence for older children

Health cover

Health Insurance per Child

Where private cover is required (typically when the EU citizen is self-sufficient), each child normally needs to be covered — on a family policy listing every child or individual cover, with a certificate naming each one. Where the EU citizen has public entitlement, children can often be registered as beneficiaries. See the health insurance page and family health insurance.

Schooling

A Note on Schooling

Children resident in Spain access education; enrolment is handled separately from the card. Many expat families also use private cover for faster paediatric appointments. We focus on the insurance part only.
