Overview

What Documents You Will Need

We do not handle visa applications or give immigration legal advice. We are English-speaking Sanitas health insurance specialists who help you arrange the private health insurance many Spanish visa and residency routes require — suitable policy options, certificate wording, start dates and personalised quotes. Visa rules vary by consulate and change over time, so always confirm the full immigration requirements with the relevant Spanish consulate, an Extranjería office or a qualified immigration specialist.

A tarjeta comunitaria application draws on two sets of documents: the EU citizen’s (proving their identity, residence and status in Spain) and the family member’s (proving identity, relationship and admissibility). Foreign public documents generally need an apostille and an official sworn translation. Lists vary by office, so confirm yours.

EU citizen

EU Citizen Documents

  • Valid passport or national ID
  • Proof of residence and status in Spain (work, self-employment, study or self-sufficiency)
  • Padrón registration
  • Proof of resources/health cover where self-sufficient

Family member

Family Member Documents

  • Valid passport and photos
  • Marriage or birth certificate proving the relationship
  • Dependency evidence where relevant (parents, adult children)
  • Health insurance certificate where required
  • Application forms

Legalisation

Apostille & Sworn Translation

Civil-status documents (marriage, birth) and other foreign public documents usually need a Hague apostille and then an official sworn (jurada) translation into Spanish. Arrange these early — they take time and the translation often needs to include the apostille.

Insurance

The Health Insurance Certificate

Where private cover is required, the certificate should name the family member and show comprehensive cover valid in Spain, with no co-payments where the office expects it, from an insurer authorised in Spain. We arrange the cover and provide the certificate — see the health insurance page or get a quote.
