Get a Quote →Australian students coming to Spain may need private health insurance for their Spanish student visa, study stay or residence authorisation. We help Australian students and families compare Sanitas student health insurance options in English. For eligible students aged 14 to 35 coming to Spain for a study stay from 3 to 14 months, Sanitas International Students is usually the first option to check — designed for international students in Spain, with no copayments, no waiting periods, medical cover in Spain and repatriation, subject to the current Sanitas terms.
Do you need it
Australian citizens are non-EU nationals, so if you are coming to Spain to study for longer than a short stay, you will usually need to check the correct student visa or student residence authorisation route. Health insurance is commonly one of the key documents requested as part of the application.
The insurance normally needs to provide suitable medical cover in Spain, match the dates of your study stay, and include the certificate wording required for your application. In many cases, a no-copay private health insurance policy is requested because the authorities want to see that the student will have access to healthcare in Spain without relying on the Spanish public system. The exact requirement can depend on the type of studies, the length of stay, where you apply and the authority reviewing the file.
Home cover
Australian Medicare, overseas health cover, university health plans, travel insurance or international student policies may not provide the certificate wording and cover structure usually required for Spanish student visa or residence applications.
Medicare is not designed as private health insurance for Spanish immigration purposes. Some Australian travel or overseas student policies may be useful for general travel protection, but they may not provide the no-copay private medical cover, repatriation wording or Spanish-style insurance certificate expected for a Spanish student visa application.
For many Australian students, the clearer and safer option is a Spanish private health insurance policy from a recognised Spanish insurer, with suitable certificate wording for the student visa application.
International Students
Sanitas International Students is usually the first Sanitas option to check for eligible Australian students coming to Spain. It is designed for international students who need private health insurance for a study stay in Spain, and normally includes no copayments, no waiting periods, medical cover in Spain and repatriation, subject to the current Sanitas International Students policy terms and eligibility rules.
This plan may be suitable where the student is aged between 14 and 35 and the study stay is from 3 to 14 months. It can be useful for Australian students attending university courses, Spanish language schools, exchange programmes, master's studies, business schools, internships linked to study or other eligible academic routes. Before choosing the policy, the student's age, start date, study duration, route, city in Spain and cover needs should all be checked.
Study types
Australian students may come to Spain for university degrees, postgraduate study, Spanish language courses, business schools, hospitality and tourism programmes, exchange programmes, vocational training or professional study. The correct health insurance option depends on the length and type of course, so the policy dates should be aligned carefully with the visa application and expected stay. Check whether your school, university or programme provider needs proof of insurance before enrolment, before visa submission or before arrival in Spain.
Over 35 / longer
Not every student will fit the Sanitas International Students plan. If the student is over 35, if the study programme is longer than 14 months, or if the situation has unusual requirements, we would check alternative Sanitas options.
Depending on the case, the alternatives may include Sanitas Residents, Residents Platinum or another Sanitas private health insurance option. The correct choice depends on the student's age, route, length of stay, medical history and cover needs. It is important not to choose a plan only because it is cheaper — the insurance must match the situation.
Certificate
For a Spanish student visa application, the insurance certificate should normally show the correct insured person, the policy start date, the type of cover, the insurer details and any wording required for the student visa route. Where no-copay cover is required, this should be reflected clearly in the certificate.
Australian students applying from Australia may present the certificate as part of the visa file submitted through the relevant Spanish consulate, visa centre or application process; students already in Spain may need documentation for a renewal, extension or residence-card process. The certificate should match the dates of the study stay as closely as possible — if it starts too late, uses the wrong name or misses required wording, the application may be delayed or questioned. Final acceptance is always decided by the Spanish consulate, visa centre, immigration office or authority reviewing the application.
Parents
Yes, in many cases parents or family members may help arrange the policy for an Australian student, especially where the student is young, still outside Spain or needs help preparing before the move. However, the insured person must be the student, and the details must be accurate.
For younger students, the parent or guardian may need to help provide the student's personal details, passport or ID information, date of birth, course dates, Spanish city and contact details. If the student has any medical history, medication or previous treatment, this should be declared where requested. The quote should be arranged using the student's real details.
No NIE
Many Australian students will not yet have an NIE when arranging insurance before travelling to Spain. This is normal. In many cases, a student policy can be quoted using passport or ID details and personal information, subject to the current Sanitas process and policy requirements. If an NIE is later issued, the policy details may need to be updated where required.
Students should not leave insurance until the last minute, because proof of cover may be needed before arrival or before a submission deadline.
Medical history
Australian students with ongoing medication, previous treatment, surgery, chronic conditions, recent investigations or medical history should declare this where requested. Having a medical condition does not automatically mean the student cannot get insurance. However, Sanitas may need to review the case, request more information, apply specific terms, exclude certain conditions or decline the application depending on the policy and health declaration.
It is important not to hide medical information. If a condition is not declared correctly, this may cause problems later with claims, cover or policy validity. See our pre-existing conditions guide.
Cities
Australian students study across Spain, especially in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, Granada, Salamanca, Málaga and Alicante. Madrid and Barcelona are often popular for universities, business schools, international programmes and study-abroad routes, while Seville, Granada and Salamanca are especially popular for Spanish language learning, culture and semester-abroad programmes.
Before choosing a policy, it is sensible to check local Sanitas medical access in the city where the student will live — general doctors, specialists, diagnostic centres, hospitals, emergency care and the cuadro médico in the local area. See our Sanitas medical network guide.
Which plan
For eligible students aged 14 to 35 coming to Spain for a study stay from 3 to 14 months, Sanitas International Students is usually the first option to check. If the student is outside the age range, studying for longer than the standard period, staying more permanently or wanting broader private healthcare, we may need to compare alternative Sanitas options. The correct plan depends on the student's route, age, dates, medical history and cover needs.
