The rule

Why Each Family Member Needs Cover

We do not handle visa applications or give immigration legal advice. We are English-speaking Sanitas health insurance specialists who help you arrange the private health insurance many Spanish visa and residency routes require — suitable policy options, certificate wording, start dates and personalised quotes. Visa rules vary by consulate and change over time, so always confirm the full immigration requirements with the relevant Spanish consulate, an Extranjería office or a qualified immigration specialist.
Quick answer

Family reunification usually requires comprehensive private health insurance for each family member, on a policy that names them, with full cover in Spain and no co-payments where expected. We arrange the Sanitas cover and certificate; we do not handle the application.

For family reunification, each family member joining you in Spain normally needs comprehensive private health insurance from an insurer authorised in Spain, unless they will be covered by Spanish social security. A sponsor’s own policy does not automatically extend to incoming relatives — and a policy that does not list a person will not evidence cover for them. So the rule is simple: every joining member must be named.

If the family member you are joining is an EU/EEA/Swiss citizen rather than a non-EU resident, you usually need the tarjeta comunitaria (EU family member card) instead — a different, often simpler route. See tarjeta comunitaria vs family reunification.

Not travel

Why Travel Insurance Is Not Enough

Travel insurance is designed for short trips and emergencies, not residence. Family reunification expects a comprehensive residence policy with full cover in Spain and the right certificate — a travel policy will not meet the requirement, and a quote or receipt is not a certificate. The certificate is issued once the policy is in force.

Certificate

What the Certificate Should Include

  • The insured person’s full name (each family member)
  • Comprehensive cover valid in Spain
  • No co-payments where the route expects it
  • No waiting periods (carencias) that would leave gaps, where required
  • Insurer authorised to operate in Spain
  • Policy validity dates
Requirements can vary by consulate, so we make sure the certificate matches what yours expects.

Policy type

Family Policy vs Individual Policies

You can usually cover everyone on a single family policy that lists each member, or take individual policies per person. A family policy is often simpler to manage and present; individual policies can suit mixed situations (for example an older parent assessed separately). We advise on the cleaner option for your family and ages.

Members

Cover by Family Member

Spouse or partner

Added to a family policy or covered individually, with a named certificate. See bringing your spouse.

Children

Each child named — family cover often suits, and many families value faster paediatric access. See bringing your children.

Older parents

Cover is arranged through a private policy, but acceptance and terms depend on age and any health declaration. See bringing your parents, retiree cover and over-60 cover.

Underwriting

Medical History, Underwriting & Pre-Existing Conditions

Private cover involves a health declaration, and acceptance and exact terms depend on age and medical history — particularly for older parents. A pre-existing condition does not automatically mean no cover, but it may affect terms, so it is best disclosed and assessed early. We are honest about what is realistic: older applicants can often be assessed for suitable Sanitas options, but acceptance and terms depend on age, medical history and the insurer’s underwriting rules.

Options

Sanitas Residents, Residents Platinum & Family Options

Suitable options often include Sanitas family cover and the Residents range, depending on who is joining and their ages. Sanitas Residents and Residents Platinum are common choices for visa/residency cover, while family health insurance can suit households; comprehensive cover is the broader umbrella. We recommend the right fit for your family.

Need a Certificate for Family Reunification?

Need a Sanitas certificate for family reunification? Tell us who is joining you and their ages, and we’ll prepare the right quote and certificate wording for each member — in plain English, with the start date timed to the move. Get a family quote.

Start dates

Start Dates & Arranging Cover Early

A policy can usually be arranged in advance with a future start month, so the certificate is ready for the consulate stage while cover begins around the move. Arranging it early removes a common bottleneck and means the insurance is never the reason for a delay. Exact options depend on current Sanitas processes, which we confirm with you.
