Get a Quote →If you are coming to Spain to study Spanish or another language, you may need private health insurance for your student visa, study stay or residence authorisation. Language students often need to be especially careful because course length, school type, visa route and certificate wording can all affect the type of insurance required. For eligible students aged 14 to 35 coming to Spain for 3 to 14 months, Sanitas International Students is usually the first option to check.
Do you need it
Many non-EU students coming to Spain for a language course may need private health insurance if they are applying for a student visa or student residence authorisation. This is especially relevant where the course is longer than a short stay, forms part of a formal study route, or requires proof of healthcare cover for the visa file.
The insurance normally needs to provide suitable medical cover in Spain, match the dates of the course or stay, and include the certificate wording required for the application. In many cases, a no-copayment private health insurance policy is requested because the authorities want to see that the student has healthcare access in Spain without relying on the Spanish public system.
The exact requirement can depend on nationality, course length, school type, where the student applies and the authority reviewing the file. Final acceptance always rests with the Spanish consulate, visa centre, immigration office or authority reviewing the application.
Be careful
Language courses in Spain can vary widely. Some students come for a short intensive Spanish course, while others enrol in a longer programme lasting several months or a full academic year. Some language students apply from their home country, while others may already be in Spain and need documentation for a student residence process.
Because of this, the insurance should not be chosen randomly. A travel policy, cheap policy with copayments or home-country policy may not provide the right structure or certificate for a Spanish student visa. The policy dates should also be checked carefully. If the cover starts too late, ends too early, or does not match the study stay, the visa file may be questioned.
Sanitas
For eligible students aged 14 to 35 coming to Spain for a study stay from 3 to 14 months, Sanitas International Students is usually the first option to check. If the student is over 35, staying longer, applying under a different route, or has unusual certificate requirements, alternative Sanitas options may need to be reviewed, subject to current terms and eligibility.
It is designed for international students and normally includes no copayments, no waiting periods, medical cover in Spain and repatriation, subject to current Sanitas International Students terms and eligibility rules. This can make it a strong option for language students who need private health insurance for a student visa or study stay in Spain. Before arranging the policy, the student's age, nationality, course dates, arrival date, Spanish city, school details, visa route and certificate requirements should all be checked.
Spanish learners
Many international students come to Spain specifically to learn Spanish. This may be through a private language academy, university language department, intensive Spanish course, cultural programme, DELE preparation course or longer language-study route.
If the course requires a student visa or student residence authorisation, the health insurance certificate may need to confirm private medical cover in Spain, no-copayment structure where required, and policy dates that match the intended stay. Students should check whether their language school provides any insurance guidance, but they should not assume that a school enrolment document automatically solves the healthcare requirement.
Travel insurance
Travel insurance is often not the same as private health insurance for a Spanish student visa. It may be suitable for short trips, luggage, travel disruption or emergency medical situations, but many travel policies are not designed for residence-style healthcare access in Spain.
A travel policy may include reimbursement-only claims, deductibles, maximum trip lengths, emergency-only cover or exclusions. It may also fail to provide the certificate wording expected for a student visa or residence application. For many language students, a Spanish private health insurance policy from a recognised Spanish insurer is the clearer and safer option.
Home cover
Some students already have public healthcare, private health insurance, university insurance or family cover in their home country. This may be useful in some circumstances, but it may not be enough for a Spanish student visa file.
The issue is not only whether the student has some kind of insurance. The question is whether the policy provides suitable medical cover in Spain and can produce a certificate that matches the Spanish application requirements. If the policy does not clearly show private medical cover in Spain, no-copayment wording where required, suitable dates and any repatriation wording requested, the application may be delayed or questioned.
No-copay
For many student visa routes, the insurance may need to be no-copayment cover, often described in Spanish as sin copago. This means that the student does not normally pay an additional small fee each time they use covered medical services within the policy conditions and network. It is different from a policy with copayments, where the monthly price may be lower but the student pays extra when using certain services.
For visa purposes, no-copayment wording may be important because the reviewing authority may want reassurance that the student has access to private healthcare in Spain without additional usage charges for covered services. See no-copayment student visa health insurance.
Certificate
The health insurance certificate is often one of the most important documents in the student visa file. It should normally show the correct insured person, policy start date, insurer details, type of cover and any wording required for the application route.
For language students, the certificate should be checked against the course dates and expected arrival date. If the course starts in September but the insurance starts later, the application may be questioned. If the student's name does not match the passport, or if the policy does not show the right cover structure, the visa process may become more complicated. Final acceptance of the certificate always rests with the authority reviewing the application.
3–14 months
Sanitas International Students is usually the first option to check for eligible students aged 14 to 35 coming to Spain for a study stay from 3 to 14 months. This can fit many language students who are coming for a semester, academic term, intensive programme, longer Spanish course or study route within that timeframe.
If the language course is shorter than 3 months, longer than 14 months, or part of a different type of residence route, another insurance option may need to be reviewed.
Over 35
Some language students are mature students, career changers, retirees, professionals or adults taking time in Spain to learn Spanish. If the student is over 35, Sanitas International Students may not be the correct option.
Depending on the case, alternatives may include Sanitas Residents, Residents Platinum or another Sanitas private health insurance option. The correct policy depends on the student's age, nationality, visa or residence route, length of stay, medical history and certificate requirements. See student health insurance for over-35s.
Longer than 14 months
If the language course or study route is longer than 14 months, Sanitas International Students may not fit the full stay. This can happen with longer language programmes, combined language and university routes, multi-stage studies or extensions. In these cases, another Sanitas option may need to be checked to make sure the student has suitable private health insurance for the full application route.
Medical history
Language students with ongoing medication, previous treatment, surgery, chronic conditions, recent investigations or medical history should declare this where requested. Having a medical condition does not automatically mean the student cannot get insurance. However, Sanitas may need to review the case, request more information, apply exclusions or special terms, or decline the application depending on the condition, policy and health declaration.
It is important not to hide medical information. Incorrect or incomplete declarations may cause problems later with claims, cover or policy validity.
Cities
Language students study across Spain, especially in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Salamanca, Granada, Seville, Málaga, Alicante and other university or language-study cities. Salamanca and Granada are especially popular for Spanish language learning and student life, while Madrid and Barcelona are often chosen for larger schools, universities, international programmes and professional opportunities. Valencia, Málaga, Seville and Alicante may appeal to students looking for a mix of language learning, lifestyle and Mediterranean living.
Before choosing a policy, it is sensible to check local Sanitas medical access in the city where the student will live, including general doctors, specialists, diagnostic centres, hospitals, emergency care and the cuadro médico in the local area.
