Get a Quote →EU, EEA and Swiss citizens usually start by comparing general Sanitas private health insurance options such as Más Salud, Más Salud Sin Copago, Más Salud Familias or Único — depending on status, age, medical history and reason for cover. Sanitas Residents and Residents Platinum are more commonly used for third-country visa and residency routes, so they are not automatically the first option for EU citizens. This page matches the right Sanitas option to your EU situation, with English-speaking help.
Which fits
EU citizens usually start by comparing general Sanitas private health insurance options, matched to status, rather than the visa-specific Residents plans. This table is the quick guide — exact suitability depends on age, health declaration and current terms, and a personalised quote is required for pricing:
| EU citizen situation | Sanitas route to consider | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Economically inactive, applying for CUE | Más Salud Sin Copago / comprehensive no-copay | Cleaner for official registration |
| EU couple or family applying for CUE | Más Salud Familias Sin Copago | Family-style comprehensive cover |
| Already resident with public healthcare | Más Salud, Más Salud Plus, Único or other general plans | Private healthcare upgrade |
| EU retiree with an S1 | Optional private Sanitas cover | Not always required for registration |
| EU retiree without S1 / public cover | Comprehensive no-copay Sanitas option | May need private cover |
| Permanent resident wanting private healthcare | Único, Más Salud or other general plans | Visa certificate usually not the issue |
| EU family members | Case by case | Each member's entitlement may differ |
The headline: lead with Más Salud or a general plan, and only consider Residents / Platinum where a third-country visa route is actually involved.
CUE
EU, EEA and Swiss citizens staying more than three months register for the green certificate (CUE). Economically inactive applicants — those not working in Spain and not yet in the public system — may be asked to show comprehensive private health insurance plus sufficient resources.
For this, a no-copay comprehensive plan such as Más Salud Sin Copago (or Más Salud Familias for a couple or family) is usually the cleaner choice, because some registration offices treat a copay structure as not fully equivalent to public cover. The CUE is not a visa, so a visa-specific Residents plan is not normally needed, and requirements vary by office. Our EU residency certificate guide has the full detail.
EHIC / GHIC
No — not for residence. The EHIC (or UK GHIC) is designed for temporary stays and medically necessary treatment during visits. It is not normally treated as full residence healthcare proof for someone settling in Spain long term and registering for the CUE.
For registration, offices want cover that reflects you living in Spain — Spanish social security through work, an accepted S1, or comprehensive private insurance for economically inactive applicants. Keep your EHIC or GHIC for travel, but do not rely on it for residency, and check the current requirements for your province. This is a common point of confusion for Irish citizens and British or dual-national EU passport holders in particular.
Why Sanitas
EU citizens choose Sanitas for several different reasons, and the right plan follows the reason:
Some of these are about meeting a registration requirement; others are simply about wanting private healthcare on top of public cover. We match the Sanitas option to your reason rather than assuming one answer fits everyone.
Public + private
Many EU citizens already have Spanish public healthcare — through employment, autónomo registration, an S1 or residence status — but still want private Sanitas cover for quicker specialists, diagnostics, hospitals and convenience. In that situation private cover is an optional upgrade, not a registration requirement, so the choice is driven by healthcare needs and budget.
For this group, general Sanitas options such as Único, Más Salud or Más Salud Plus are usually the natural comparison, depending on age, health declaration and current availability — rather than a visa-specific product.
Where does Sanitas Único fit? Sanitas Único may be relevant for EU citizens or permanent residents who already have access to healthcare and want a more limited or specific private option, subject to age, underwriting and current availability. It is not usually the first route for CUE applicants who need comprehensive no-copay cover — for them, a no-copay Más Salud plan is normally the cleaner fit.
S1 retirees
EU retirees with an accepted S1 may not need private insurance for the CUE, because their home country funds their public healthcare in Spain — but many still choose Sanitas as private cover for faster private access. EU retirees without an S1 or public entitlement may need comprehensive private cover, in which case a no-copay Más Salud plan is usually the fit. Check S1 eligibility and timing with the relevant authorities first. See our EU retirees guide.
Families
EU families are rarely uniform: one person may work and have public healthcare, another may be economically inactive and need private cover, children may be dependants, one family member may have public entitlement while another needs private cover, and a family member may be non-EU. So each person’s situation is considered individually. Where private family cover is needed, Más Salud Familias is usually the natural option. See our EU family members guide and best plan for families.
Local network
EU citizens are often already in Spain, or know exactly where they are moving — so it is worth checking the local Sanitas network before choosing a plan. Look at the local GPs, specialists, hospitals and diagnostic centres, plus Dental Milenium access if dental matters, in the area where you live.
Provision varies by town and province, so the right plan is partly about where you are. Our Sanitas medical network, cuadro médico and Sanitas hospitals guides explain how to check the cuadro médico for your area.
